Glenn Beck Claims Bloomberg Nazi-Salute Photo Was Misunderstood, Says Media Should Apologize (Video)

Glenn Beck claims that recaps of his speech at the National Rifle Association conference were in fact misreports by the mainstream media and that he did not intend to compare New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to Hitler.

Beck stood before a giant screen during his speech and displayed a picture of Mayor Bloomberg superimposed to look like he was giving what appeared to be a Nazi salute. Beck said the picture was in fact styled ona picture of Vladimir Lenin, suggesting the Independent mayor is communist rather than a fascist Nazi.

Jewish groups lashed out at Beck after the video was published on Media Matters.

Holocaust survivor and national director of the Anti-Defamation League Abraham Foxman said the implication that Mr Bloomberg is turning New York into a Nazi-like state is “outrageous, insensitive and deeply offensive on so many levels.”

“Glenn Beck should know better,” Foxman added. “He has drawn similar inappropriate analogies to the Holocaust before. We wish he would stop trivializing the history of the Holocaust to score partisan political points.”

During his speech Beck said, “I am amazed at how many of my New York friends have become absolute dopes and just will accept the soda ban, the popcorn ban, the salt ban,” referring to Bloombergs measures to fight climbing obesity rates.

He then proposed a new slogan to replace I Heart New York with You Will Love New York unveiling the image of a saluting Bloomberg with a white arm band over a red background.

Im sorry this looks to you like Adolph Hitler, but this was actually the exact image ripped off Soviet propaganda art who also killed a lot of people, yes. But you guys never seem to have a problem with Lenin. You never seem to have a problem with Mao. You never seem to have a problem with Stalin. Isnt that weird?

Beck claimed he expected this to happen and wants the mainstream media, in particular ABC News, to apologize for smearing my name and saying that I am making Bloomberg look like a Nazi.

I hate to do this to you, ABC News, but what you stop taking your stories directly from Media Matters, you might begin to have a little bit of credibility, Beck said on his show.

Beck criticized for likening Bloomberg to Nazis

NEW YORK, May 7 (UPI) — Jewish groups are criticizing conservative commentator Glenn Beck for likening New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to a Nazi during a speech to the NRA.

While addressing the NRA’s annual conference last weekend in Houston as its keynote speaker, Beck said he had come up with a new marketing advertisement for New York to replace the “I heart New York” logo that has been around since the 1970s.

“I’d like to show you my new advertisement for it, new slogan …,” he said. “‘You will love New York!'”

He then revealed a picture of Bloomberg, who has spearheaded efforts to ban assault rifles and institute background checks on all sales, appearing to give the Nazi salute while wearing a Nazi armband, ABC News reported Tuesday.

“Glenn Beck, the keynote speaker at the NRA’s annual convention, trivializes the Holocaust when he compares New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to Adolf Hitler,” B’nai B’rith said in calling for Beck’s apology.

Abraham Foxman, a Holocaust survivor and national director of the Anti-Defamation League, issued a similar rebuke.

“While he doesn’t say it, it seems Glenn Beck is implying through an image of Mayor Bloomberg in an apparent Hitlerian salute is that the mayor’s policies on gun ownership and other issues are turning New York city into a Nazi-like state,” Foxman said. “That suggestion is outrageous, insensitive and deeply offensive on so many levels.”

Beck hadn’t responded to the criticism, ABC said. Bloomberg, who is Jewish, declined to comment.

Anti-Defamation League Adapts to Challenges as It Turns 100

Abraham Foxman Embraces Role as Anti-Semitism Arbiter

david karp

Happy Birthday Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, gets hug from Vice President Joe Biden at the groups centennial celebration.

Washington As it enters its second century, the organization identified more than any other with fighting anti-Semitism finds levels of anti-Jewish bigotry in America lower than ever. By the admission of the Anti-Defamation Leagues own national director, doors once closed to Jews are now almost uniformly open, up to and including the nations elite corporate suites, its most selective universities and its highest political offices.

Palm Beachs tony Breakers Hotel once barred Jews from its lobby; now it hosts the ADLs own annual conference. Mr. Breaker is spinning in his grave, gibed Abraham Foxman, who after 26 years at the ADLs helm is virtually branded as its public face.

Perhaps, as it marks its 100th anniversary, this organization, which has done so much to expand Jews equal access to the America dream, could declare its mission accomplished and hold a celebratory fire sale.

But to no ones surprise, the ADL is not about to do so. It instead sees an entire new world of concerns for American Jews, a world in which white-hooded Klansmen are replaced by anonymous bloggers spreading hate on the Internet, and in which minority communities espouse prejudices against Jews that have already been eradicated in other parts of America.

There arent many Jewish organizations that have reached 100 years, said Jonathan Sarna, a professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University. You make it to 100 because youre able to adapt, and I think the ADL has adapted.

During Foxmans years of leadership as the groups national director, this ability to adapt has included a greater focus on civil rights beyond the Jewish community and, like most other national Jewish groups, a greater emphasis on supporting Israel as a key part of its agenda.

The ADL marked its centennial anniversary at a gala conference in Washington that ran from April 28 to April 30 and was attended by 1,000 activists. Participants got a chance to hear Obama administration officials, including a surprise address from Vice President Joe Biden, and to attend lobbying meetings on Capitol Hill and in the White House and the State Department.

Under the 'fair use' rule of copyright law, an author may make limited use of another author's work without asking permission. Fair use is based on the belief that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted materials for purposes of commentary and criticism. The fair use privilege is perhaps the most significant limitation on a copyright owner's exclusive rights.

Fair use as described at 17 U.S.C. Section 107:

"Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phono-records or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:

  • (2) the nature of the copyrighted work,
  • (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and
  • (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work."
