Just Because You’re Paranoid…

In less then a weekon September 11th, as it turns outCato is holding a book forum on Jesse Walkers terrific new book,The United States of Paranoia: A Conspiracy Theory.

Walker, books editor forReasonmagazine, uses historian Richard Hofstadters famous 1964 monograph The Paranoid Style in American Politicsas his jumping-off point. In that flawed but fascinating essay, Hofstadterlocates political paranoia mostly on the fringes of American politics and mostly on the Right. Its often used today to frame concerns about government abuse as so much conspiracy-mongering.Here, for example, is Alan Dershowitz invoking Hofstadter to dismiss Glenn Greenwald, who broke the story on NSAs dragnet data-collection programs, as the personification of the paranoid streak in American politics.

Walker insists, contra Hofstadter, that the Paranoid StyleIsAmerican Politics. From the colonial era, to the Anti-Masonic party, through sundry Red Scares, militia scares, and post-9/11 panics, Walker writes, the fear of conspiracies has been a potent force across the political spectrum, at the center as well as the extreme. Whats more, some of the most dangerous forms of political paranoia are the kinds that catch on with people inside the halls of power. ThisReason magazine feature on what Walker calls The Paranoid Center gives a flavor of his argument.

But theres much more in the book, which argues that conspiracy stories can become a form of folklore. They tell us something true about the anxieties and experiences of the people captivated by them even when [they] say nothing true about the objects of the theory itself. Asone reviewer put it,The United States of Paranoiacontainsso many tasty morsels of historical marginalia that it nearly bursts with weirdness.

Were happy to have as our featured commentatorSam Tanenhaus, writer-at-large for theNew York Times, longtime editor of theNYT Book Review (2004-13) and author of such books as Whitaker Chambers: A Biography andThe Death of Conservatism. Heres Tanenhaus on Hofstadter.

Youd have to be nuts not to RSVP right now for what promises to be a fascinating discussion of political paranoia Left, Right, and Center. Do it here.

Galley Girl at Book Expo 2013: The First Night

A warm May evening in New York City was a pleasant setting for thefirst night of Book Expo revelry;in the space offour hours,Ihad made it to three parties, andImstill standing. Each party was its own little mysterious world, with adifferent language and rules, depending on the publishing house and its roster of authors.ThisGirl was determined to crack the code.

Its a heart-palpitating read!David Drake, the deputy publisher of the Crown Group, made that blurb-worthy assessment of one of his houses fall books. He was standing in the doorway of Schillers Liquor Bar, a popular restaurant on Manhattans Lower East Side, where his company was celebrating their upcoming lineup. The book receiving Drakes praise wasFive Daysat Memorial(September), a Katrina-era hospital expose by Pulitzer-Prize winnerSheri Fink. His genuine enthusiasm for the home team was shared by almost every publishing personageIencountered.

Also at the Crown shindig, Harvard law school professor Alan Dershowitz, author of Taking the Stand: My Life in the Law (October), was holding court in the center of the room. People are going to be very surprised at who I am when they read this, he said. The book, his 30th, begins with his birth and ends with a letter to the editor criticizing his (imaginary) obituary. Its like having a baby at an old age, he said of his latest effort.

A few feet away, CNN analyst Peter Bergen was celebrating his just-announced deal with Crown for a book about homegrown terrorism. He shared his thoughts with us about Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the younger brother in the Boston Marathon bombings. Bergen wondered whether there might have been an intervention to turn Dzhokhar, the less radical of the two brothers, away from his deadly mission, if the right person had talked to him. Said Bergen, I dont think it was inevitable that this 19-year-old kid would commit this atrocity. Now, hell be lucky if he gets life in prison without parole.

I leftthe Crown party (sliders, nachos, fried oysters and Croque-Monsieurs), and took a short ride with a grumpy cab driver to the sleek Eventi Hotel, where Howard Books was hosting a cocktail party forTim ConwayofCarol Burnett Showfame. The79-year-oldcomedian, whose memoir,Whats So Funny?will be published in October, was walking around with a name tag that read BOB FELLER, presumably after the famous major league pitcher of an earlier era.

Isat down to talk with Conway, who has a modest, comfortable style. How long had it taken him to write his book? Almost three days, he confided. He came by his sense of humor at home, he said; his parents were very amusing. His father was Irish, his mother wasRomanian, and I could not understand either one. When he was in his early teens, Conway wanted to be a jockey (but I fell off a lot); from there, he aspired to be a football player (I was the only 95-pound guard on our team. I was like a little weaselthey couldnt catch me.)

Comedian Larry David has been called a lot of things over the course of his long and successful career, but were pretty sure peace maker has never been one of them. Until now. Well, almost sort of, anyway.

Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz has sent an episode of Davids HBO show Curb Your Enthusiasm to Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in hopes that he will invite Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas over to watch it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As dedicated Curb fans have likely already guessed, its none other than the Palestinian Chicken episode, in which David is conflicted over whether its okay to get chicken from a Palestinian-owned restaurant even though to the dismay of his Jewish friends its housed right next to a deli.

David got the whole thing going by first sending the DVD out to Dershowitz. The attorney says its been received by Netanyahu, who is looking forward to watching it.

Maybe if they both get a good laugh, they can begin a negotiating process, says Dershowitz of the two leaders.

It sounds as crazy as any good Curb episode, but after watching this clip we think maybe hes right.

Fair Use Disclaimer

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Under the 'fair use' rule of copyright law, an author may make limited use of another author's work without asking permission. Fair use is based on the belief that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted materials for purposes of commentary and criticism. The fair use privilege is perhaps the most significant limitation on a copyright owner's exclusive rights.

Fair use as described at 17 U.S.C. Section 107:

"Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phono-records or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:

  • (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for or nonprofit educational purposes,
  • (2) the nature of the copyrighted work,
  • (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and
  • (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work."
