Idaho gunman kills 3 in multiple shootings

A gunman killed three people and wounded another during a shooting spree Saturday at three locations in Moscow, Idaho, the authorities said.

The suspect, 29-year-old John Lee, was captured in the afternoon following a high-speed chase in nearby Washington state.

Moscow Police Chief David Duke said Lee killed his adoptive mother, 61-year-Terri Grzebielski, at her home before heading to Northwest Mutual life insurance.

The gunman shot David Trail, 76, a Moscow businessman, and Michael Chin, 39, of Seattle. Trail died at Pullman Regional Hospital. Chin was treated for critical wounds at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow before being flown to a Seattle hospital, Duke said.

The shooter then drove to an Arby’s restaurant and asked for the manager. When she appeared, he pulled out a gun and opened fire. The manager, 47-year-old Belinda Niebuhr, died at the Moscow hospital.

Duke said that Trail, the brother of a former Idaho state representative, was Lee’s landlord. He said there were “some issues” regarding the apartment, but didn’t know of any eviction proceeding.

Chin was discussing business with Trail when the gunman arrived. Duke said Chin was shot in the arm and leg.

Investigators were trying to determine if there were any links between Lee and the Arby’s manager.

“We know he didn’t work there,” Duke said. The chief said that the surviving workers did not recognize Lee.

Duke told The Associated Press later that police have determined that Lee’s parents ate at the restaurant and knew the manager well.

Moscow shooting leaves three dead

Three people are dead and one is in critical condition following a string of Saturday shootings in Moscow.

Moscow Police Chief David Duke said the suspected shooter has been identified as Moscow resident John Lee, 29.

Amber Emery | Argonaut Police responded to a report of a shooting at Arbys in Moscow. Belinda Niebuhr, a manager, was pronounced dead.

The deceased victims include David Trail, 76; Belinda Niebuhr, 47; and Terri Grzebielski, 61. All victims were Moscow residents. An additional victim, Michael Chin, 39, of Seattle, is in critical condition at Gritman Medical Center from gunshot wounds to his left leg and arm.

We believe Mr. Lee is responsible for all of the deaths, Duke said.

Police responded to a report of a shooting at 2:31 p.m. Saturday at 303 E. Third St. in Moscow. Police arrived at the scene to find Trail and Chin injured from gunshot wounds.

Trail was transported to Pullman Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Trail owned the apartment complex where he was shot, and police believe Chin did not know any of the other victims or the shooter. Duke said Chin was taking care of rental business with Trail when Lee arrived.

Duke said they believe Lee also shot his mother, Grzebielski, prior to shooting Trail and Chin. Grzebielski was found dead in her home on Veatch Street in Moscow. Grzebielski was a physicians assistant with Moscow Family Medicine and Lees adoptive mother.

While police were responding to the first call, they received a second report of a shooting in Moscow, with the suspect matching the description of the first shooting.
