Israel lobby in the United States – Wikipedia, the free …

The Israel lobby (at times called the Zionist lobby or sometimes the Jewish lobby) is the diverse coalition of those who, as individuals and as groups, seek to influence the foreign policy of the United States in support of Zionism, Israel or the specific policies of its government.[1] The lobby consists of Jewish-American secular and religious groups. The most famous and visible group within the Israel lobby is the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). AIPAC and other groups within the Israel lobby influence American public policy in a variety of ways such as through education, responding to criticism of Israel, and putting forth arguments in support of Israel. The Israel lobby is known for its success in encouraging U.S. lawmakers to support the policies that it supports, such as the right for Israel to exist, and vetoing the recognition of Palestine.

A Christian belief in the return of the Jews to the Holy Land has roots in the US, which pre-date both the establishment of the Zionist movement and the establishment of Israel. Lobbying by these groups, to influence the US government in ways similar to Zionist ideology, dates back to at least the 19th century.

In 1844, Christian restorationist George Bush, a professor of Hebrew at New York University and distantly related to the Bush political family, published a book entitled The Valley of Vision; or, The Dry Bones of Israel Revived.[2] In it he denounced the thralldom and oppression which has so long ground them (the Jews) to the dust, and called for elevating the Jews to a rank of honorable repute among the nations of the earth by restoring the Jews to the land of Israel where the bulk would be converted to Christianity.[3] This, according to Bush, would benefit not only the Jews, but all of mankind, forming a link of communication between humanity and God. It will blaze in notoriety…”. It will flash a splendid demonstration upon all kindreds and tongues of the truth.[4] The book sold about a million copies in the antebellum period.[5] The Blackstone Memorial of 1891 was also a significant Christian Restorationist petition effort, led by William Eugene Blackstone, to persuade President Benjamin Harrison to pressure the Ottoman Sultan for the delivery of Palestine to the Jews.[6][7]

Starting in 1914, the involvement of Louis Brandeis and his brand of American Zionism made Jewish Zionism a force on the American scene for the first time, under his leadership it had increased ten-fold to about 200,000.[8] As chair of the American Provisional Executive Committee for General Zionist Affairs, Brandeis raised millions of dollars to relieve Jewish suffering in war-torn Europe, and from that time became the financial center for the world Zionist movement.[9] The British Balfour Declaration of 1917 additionally advanced the Zionist movement and gave it official legitimacy. The US Congress passed the first joint resolution stating its support for a homeland in Palestine for the Jewish people on September 21, 1922.[10] The same day, the Mandate of Palestine was approved by the Council of the League of Nations.

Zionist lobbying in the United States aided the creation of the State of Israel in 1947-48. The preparation of and voting for the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine which preceded the Israeli Declaration of Independence, was met with an outpouring of Jewish American support and advocacy in Washington.[11] President Truman later noted, “The facts were that not only were there pressure movements around the United Nations unlike anything that had been seen there before, but that the White House, too, was subjected to a constant barrage. I do not think I ever had as much pressure and propaganda aimed at the White House as I had in this instance. The persistence of a few of the extreme Zionist leadersactuated by political motives and engaging in political threatsdisturbed and annoyed me.”[12]

In the 1950s, the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs was created by Isaiah L. “Si” Kenen. During the Eisenhower administration, Israel’s concerns were not at the forefront. Other problems in the Middle East and USSR were paramount, and Israel’s U.S. supporters were not as active as they had been. AZCPA formed a pro-Israel lobbying committee to counter rumors that the Eisenhower administration was going to investigate the American Zionist Council.[13] AZCPA’s Executive Committee decided to change their name from American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs to American Israel Public Affairs Committee.[14]

The relationship between Israel and the government of the United States began with strong popular support for Israel and governmental reservations about the wisdom of creating a Jewish state; formal inter-government relations remained chilly until 1967.[15] Before 1967, the government of “the United States was actively hostile to Israel.”[16] Since 1979, Israel has received the most foreign assistance. The roughly $3 billion in assistance to Israel comprises a small percentage of the roughly $3 trillion US budget.[17] AIPAC “has grown into a 100,000-member national grassroots movement” and claims that it is America’s “pro-Israel lobby.”[18]

The pro-Israel lobby is composed of formal and informal components.

Support for Israel is strong among American Christians of all denominations.[19] Informal Christian support for Israel includes a broad range varieties support for Israel ranging from the programming and news coverage on the Christian Broadcasting Network and the Christian Television Network to the more informal support of the annual Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem.[20]

Informal lobbying also includes the activities of Jewish groups. Some scholars view Jewish lobbying on behalf of Israel as one of many examples of a US ethnic group lobbying on behalf of an ethnic homeland,[21] which has met with a degree of success largely because Israel is strongly supported by a far larger and more influential Christian movement that shares its goals.[22] In a 2006 article in the London Review of Books, Professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt wrote:

If a politician does not play ball with the Jewish Lobby, he will not get elected, or re-elected, and he will either be smeared or ignored by the Jewish-owned major media.

All Jewish lobbies and organizations are interconnected and there are hundreds upon hundreds of them. The leaders of the numerous Jewish Lobby Groups go to the same synagogues, country clubs, and share the same Jewish investment bankers. And this inter-connectedness extends to the Jews who run the Federal Reserve Bank, US Homeland Security, and the US State Department.

In other words, Jews stick together. Americans must know how extremely powerful the Jewish Lobby is and how it operates to undermine Americas interests both at home and abroad. At home – by corrupting Americas political system, and abroad – by dictating American Foreign Policy against Americas best interests.

Israel Asks American Jews: Where Do Loyalties Lie?

Sheldon Adelson-Funded Group Creates Odd Questionaire

getty images

Published October 26, 2013.

Two sensitive and potentially explosive issues have always clouded the relationship between the Jewish community in the United States and the State of Israel.

The first relates to claims of dual allegiance to both Israel and the United States; the other concerns the pro-Israel, American Jewish lobby. Many of those raising such claims against American Jewry have themselves been accused of anti-Semitism.

So its strange that representatives of Israels immigrant absorption and foreign ministries have just distributed a questionnaire to tens of thousands of Israelis living in the United States and Jewish Americans that includes problematic questions on exactly these issues, and asks them to indicate where their allegiance would lie in the case of a crisis between the two countries.

The survey was commissioned by the Israeli American Council, a private nonprofit group based in Los Angeles. Its mission is to build an active and giving Israeli-American community in order to strengthen the State of Israel, our next generation, and to provide a bridge to the Jewish-American community, according to the IAC website.

The IAC was established by Israelis living in Los Angeles in 2007, and is primarily supported by Israeli-American businessman Haim Saban, who has donated close to a million dollars in the past four years.

According to the IAC, casino mogul Sheldon Adelson has financed the groups expansion.

Pro-Israel lobby rallies behind Obama in support of strike

Israel, which has been careful not to take sides in Syrias civil war, is now backing president Barack Obamas campaign to win a majority for a military strike, causing concern among a number of officials that Israel may be blamed in some quarters for dragging the US into another Middle East conflict.

Prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu responded positively to a direct request from Mr Obama who realised he was fighting an uphill battle to win a congressional majority. He instructed the powerful Jewish lobby, headed by the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac), to assist the administration in dealing with the resistance on Capitol Hill.

The committee, considered one of the most effective lobby groups in Washington, rallied to the call, and brought 250 activists to the capital in an attempt to ensure a majority for a military strike. Mr Netanyahu has also held phone conversations with US lawmakers, mainly Republicans, asking them to support Mr Obama.

Dangerous gambleIsraeli politicians have been ordered by the prime ministers office not to comment publicly on Syria, but some officials have warned that utilising the Jewish lobby is a dangerous gamble that will increase the likelihood of a Syrian counter-attack against Israel.

Some ministers even believe that Israels best interests are served by keeping Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in power, and have suggested that Mr Obama may be dragging Israel into a conflict it wants to avoid at all costs.

In the past, anti-Israel groups and anti-Semitic fringe organisations have accused the Jewish lobby of wielding undue influence and forcing Washington to go to war on Israels behalf. The pro-Israel lobby is now arguing that Israels future depends on the outcome of the American strike.

This critical decision comes at a time when Iran is racing toward obtaining nuclear capability, Aipac said in a statement. Failure to approve this resolution would weaken our countrys credibility to prevent the use and proliferation of unconventional weapons and thereby greatly endanger our countrys security and interests and those of our regional allies.

Shalom Yerushalmi, a columnist for the Maariv newspaper wrote of Aipac lobbyists seeking US Congress to back the strike: In the end, theyll sit in Washington and the Israelis will have to go into the shelters because of them.

Jewish Lobby Seeks to Turn Tide on Syria Debate in Congress

Jewish lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee is helping push President Barack Obama’s Syria intervention.

As lawmakers announce their disillusionment with striking Syria one by one, the Obama administration is looking for reinforcements. It seems everywhere they turn, it’s President Barack Obama versus Capitol Hill.

After two public congressional hearings with Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, not to mention countless classified briefings, Obama is loosing the war of popular opinion this week.

Friday, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, the man who lines up votes for his party, came out in opposition to the resolution to intervene in Syria. Thursday, Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, turned their backs on Obama’s call for action in the Middle East.

“I knew this was going to be a heavy lift,” Obama said Friday during a press conference about the growing battle.

Coming in for the assist is the Jewish lobbying group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). The group announced it will unfold an all-out effort on Capitol Hill, a landmark move for an organization that has sat out whipping members for votes on other resolutions in the past.

More than 200 leaders are expected to lobby lawmakers next week. The leaders will explain that a Syria strike will send a message not just to Syrian President Bashar Assad, but also Iranian leaders who are watching to see how the U.S. stands up against the deployment of chemical weapons.

“Simply put, barbarism on a mass scale must not be given a free pass,” AIPAC said in a released statement. “This is a critical moment when America must also send a forceful message of resolve to Iran and Hezbollah both of whom have provided direct and extensive military support to Assad. The Syrian regime and its Iranian ally have repeatedly demonstrated that they will not respect civilized norms.”

Russian Gay Rights Leader Makes Anti-Semitic Remarks

Nikolai Alexeyev Blames Jews for ‘Filthy Propaganda’

getty images

Controversial: Russian gay rights leader Nikolai Alexeyev has lashed out at Jews on social media.

Published September 03, 2013.

One of Russias most prominent gay rights activists made anti-Semitic statements on his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

The tweets appeared last week on Nikolai Alexeyevs account in connection with an article about him in OUT Magazine. Alexeyev re-tweeted comments calling the author of the article, Michael Lucas, a Jewish pig and Israeli monkey, and calling OUT Magazine a Jewish slut magazine that supports Jews and their filthy . propaganda.

In response to the comments, Human Rights First, an American nongovernmental organization, canceled a conference call featuring Alexeyev, prompting him to write on Twitter: I [was] just denied to take part in a sham conference call with U.S. journalists tomorrow. Jewish lobby in U.S. worked well. U.S.A. is a totalitarian state with no freedom of speech! I have much more freedom here in Russia!

The tweets caused several prominent gay rights activists to distance themselves from Alexeyev, 37, who has won several awards for his activism, including from GALHA, a British group affiliated with Amnesty International. He also has filed precedent-setting lawsuits for gay rights in Russia and elsewhere in Europe.

OUT magazine is a popular gay monthly publication in the United States.

Gay rights in Russia have attracted international attention in recent weeks after the Russian parliament passed a law in June prohibiting the dissemination of propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations to minors.

Support for Israel is strong among American Christians of all denominations.[19] Informal Christian support for Israel includes a broad range varieties support for Israel ranging from the programming and news coverage on the Christian Broadcasting Network and the Christian Television Network to the more informal support of the annual Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem.[20] Informal lobbying also includes the activities of Jewish groups.

Fair Use Disclaimer

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Under the 'fair use' rule of copyright law, an author may make limited use of another author's work without asking permission. Fair use is based on the belief that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted materials for purposes of commentary and criticism. The fair use privilege is perhaps the most significant limitation on a copyright owner's exclusive rights.

Fair use as described at 17 U.S.C. Section 107:

"Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phono-records or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:

  • (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for or nonprofit educational purposes,
  • (2) the nature of the copyrighted work,
  • (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and
  • (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work."
