Bomb Threat Evacuates Michigan Jewish Organization – Forward

Google Maps

(JTA) A bomb threat called in to a Jewish agency in Ann Arbor, Michigan, forced the evacuation of the building.

The caller to the Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County on Tuesday morning said there would be an explosion in the building in 20 minutes, the MLive news website reported, citing Ann Arbor police. The caller, who had a male voice, did not make any other specific threats and did not threaten the Jewish community specifically.

More than 100 clients and staff were in the office when the receptionist received the threat. The agency is located in an office building, which was evacuated. Police determined there were no explosives there.

In February, a bomb threat was called into the Hebrew Day School located at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Ann Arbor. No bomb was found.

Swastikas and other anti-Semitic graffiti were painted on an Ann Arbor skate park last week.

A new approach to Jewish mothering – Jewish Journal

My teenage son would not be excited about my writing this at his desk, or my being in his room at all. But he started high school last week and I cant believe it.

Ours is not an empty nest, but I know how soon it will become one, and I just wanted to sit with his stuff around me. Im lying about that last part. There is no way I could long for my sons stuff because its everywhere: the sneakers, the headphones, the endless stream of water glasses he fills to the top with ice, sips and abandons.

No, I am sitting in his room because I am hoping to be inspired. I am sitting in the exact spot where my desk used to be before we ripped out my office to put in his private lair I mean bedroom. I did a lot of writing in this small corner of our house over the past decade, including a book about the need for laughter in marriage.

Dumb, dumb, shortsighted, dumb.

Its not that we dont need to laugh in marriage; we most definitely do, but a mere few years later I see now I was focused on the wrong family dynamic. The relationship you really need to pull out the clown car for is the one with your teenager.

I first heard the phrase family dynamic in a therapists office in Connecticut, circa 1975. I remember all four members of my family squeezing onto a couch across from an ancient-looking woman, probably 40, dressed in soft separates and nodding a lot. We had just moved from New York City, a decision only my father was happy about. I was still young enough to roll with it, but my mother, a native New Yorker like the one Donna Summer was singing about in her top-40 hit, was eating scrambled rage and toast for breakfast, and my sister was in the middle of her 13th year, already hit by the hormonal wrecking ball of being a teenager.

That was, I have no doubt now, the straw that broke the Klein camels back.

To date, our family dynamic is healthy enough without an outside ringleader, mostly because we find laughing together as therapeutic as my mother found spending her Saturdays at Loehmanns. The unit is fine, but as the school year kicks off, Im the one whos feeling meshugge. Not just because I cant stop the march of time, but also because I cant seem to find the line between concerned parent and overbearing Jewish mother, a clich I am deathly afraid of becoming. If youve seen any Woody Allen movie made before he married his girlfriends daughter, you would be too. He always features at least one loud, nagging, unattractive Jewish mother who is eating something greasy while telling her children to stand up straight, do something about the pimples and marry rich. In fact, I go out of my way to behave quite the opposite as a mother: I proudly aspire to be underbearing,

The boys are back in school this week, which means I am privy to a lot more parenting conversations that I often feel I have to slowly back away from for fear of exposing my laissez-faire style.

What do you mean you dont read your sons texts after he goes to bed? one of the moms I know from temple asked me recently.

I mean I dont read my sons texts when he goes to bed.

But but she looked at me like there was a burning bush in my house that I was ignoring.

Im not going to walk in his room and grab his phone after hes asleep, I added.

Walk in his room? You let him keep his phone in his room at night? another one chimed in. Havent you seen Screenagers ?

Um no. And yes. He keeps it in a charger by his window.

Ill bet he does, the first one said.

What kind of a Jewish mother are you? No. 2 added, tossing her highlighted hair back and laughing.

A lame one, I guess, I said, half-jokingly while heading to my car, breaking a non-peri-menopausal sweat.

Will my fear of becoming a Jewish clich be my sons undoing? Leaving him vulnerable to cyberpredators? To a debilitating lack of sleep as he scrolls endlessly in the wee hours of the night? To a stream of naked selfies from girls that he forwards to his friends and then gets caught and arrested for trafficking in child porn?

I suddenly found myself looking back fondly to a simpler time when being a Jewish mother meant worrying that your precious child was going to get sick from snot-nosed kids on the bus, or that he didnt get enough lox on his bagel. Or praying to God silently sometimes not so silently for him to find a nice Jewish girl to marry.

Thats how I ended up at his desk, you know, to write, of course. And, perhaps, to take a more CSI: Teenager approach to my Jewish mothering.

Citing Lack of Moral Leadership, Jewish Movements Nix Traditional Phone Call With Trump – Haaretz

Reform, Conservative, and Reconstructionist movements they will not arrange the annual conference call ahead of Jewish High Holidays

WASHINGTON Organizations representing three Jewish religious denominations that together represent the vast majority of American Jewry declaredon Wednesdaythat they would not arrange a conference call with President Donald Trump ahead of the Jewish High Holidays this year and would also not participate in such a call if it takes place. During Barack Obama’s eight years as president, such a call took place every year around Rosh Hashana, which this year begins on the evening of September 20.

In a statement signed by leading rabbis from all three of the denominations, but not Orthodox representatives, the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist movements said: “We have concluded that President Trumps statements during and after the tragic events in Charlottesville are so lacking in moral leadership and empathy for the victims of racial and religious hatred that we cannot organize such a call this year.”

Trump had been sharply criticized for his initial comments blaming “many sides” for the violence in Charlottesville earlier this month around protests by far-right wing demonstrators. A 32-year-old woman, Heather Heyer, was killed when a suspected white nationalist crashed his car into anti-racist protesters.

In the statement by the three Jewish denominations, they added: “The presidents words have given succor to those who advocate anti-Semitism, racism, and xenophobia. Responsibility for the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, including the death of Heather Heyer, does not lie with many sides but with one side: the Nazis, alt-right and white supremacists who brought their hate to a peaceful community. They must be roundly condemned at all levels.”

It should be noted that the White House had not publicly expressed any intention prior to the release of the denomination’s statement to holda conference call with the Jewish community around the High Holidays this year. As ofWednesdayevening, it was not clear if such a call with the president would perhaps take place with the participation of other Jewish groups, including rabbis from the Orthodox community. The High Holiday phone call only became an annual tradition during the Obama administration. A similar call took place with Mitt Romney when he was the Republican presidential nominee in 2012.

SCI Drummer Scolds Antifa, Goes on Bizarre "Jewish Banking" Rant – Westword

The left has had an internal debate about the rise of white supremacy as of late: punch a Nazi, or love a Nazi? String Cheese Incident drummer Michael Travis decided to riff on the topic on his Facebook page, where he bashed anti-fascists for engaging in violent clashes with white supremacists in Charlottesville. But that wasn’t all.

His diatribetook a bizarre detour from the usual pacifist repudiations of militant anti-racism when he rambled about his belief in “the Jewish banking agenda,” and “the Zionist banking cartel.” This conspiracy theory, which he described as “irrefutable,” is one that anti-Semitic propagandists have peddled since the late 1800s and one that Adolf Hitler capitalized on mightily as he mobilized Germany to murder millions of Jews.

Travis wrote the following on Facebook on Friday, August 18:

“The Jewish banking agenda is fairly irrefutable ..do you think I’m anti Semitic for saying so? I don’t. I have many many dear friends that are Jewish. (Even if they never read the Torah but that’s a whole different topic) and have learned so much from them/is.. to not be allowed to notice trends in industry for fear of being called anti Semitic might be part of the way the Rothchilds and their cronies came to control the worlds monies. Of course their are other bankers that are doing evil money things. But the Zionist banking cartel is a thing… let me know if you can refute its existence.”

After being asked, “Travis, WTF is wrong with you?,” he replied:

“How am I evil all of a sudden? I abhor killing millions of people. I abhor the Nazi sentiment. I love Jews. Powerful powerful people. I think Trump is a living human piece of shit. I also think the Zionist Banking cartel is a thing. Any time anyone says Jews have done something in concert that is anything other than glowing citizens they get shat upon. Do you have evidence there isn’t a banking cartel that is largely run by jews? I’ll stop saying this if someone will present that evidence. And mind you, I am not bent on vilifying jews by pointing out this business cartel. It could have been anyone. [Smily face emoji].”

As more people rejected Travis’s opinions, he wrote that he felt attacked and victimized for espousing peace, waxed nostalgic about back when hippies were pacifists, and blamed Hitler’s rise to power on how nobody loved the Nazi leader.

Finally, Travis apologized, on Saturday, August 19, claiming ignorance.

“Hi everyone. I know I have caused quite an uproar here in the last few days. I have learned so much about privilege and oppression and the pain of a subjugated people. I have learned about myself. Know that I love everyone and my original post was meant simply to seek for fresh solutions to this abomination of a problem that has raised its head again here. That was truly my only goal: I am so sorry to those I have offended and will take what I’ve learned into all my future days. This new Nazi wave must be stopped. There is no doubt. I pray for a solution that is peaceful where education and humor and compassion can be our ‘battle’ cry. And th police can be counted on to incarcerate those that proliferate this madness. Please accept my apology and recognition of error.”

And he came to Facebook again on Monday, to apologize again:

“I feel compelled to put out another apology and recognition of my extreme ignorance and shame regarding my previous statements about Jewish banking. I truly had no idea the banking thing was a central tenant of the Nazi agenda. Unbelievable I know. My understanding of history is obviously seriously lacking…I tend to hunt for conspiracys that mess with everyone’s lives and found that and spouted out without due research or consideration for how my words effect others. I feel like scum. I have [been] nausuas for two days surrounding this. I don’t know how to make amends enough. The internet is a powerful place where words never die and I would hate for those previous comments to be where our greater community places me… I have respect for all people and wish us all freedom and joy and abhor the Nazi agenda. If you feel my sincerity in this matter please help spread This message in places where you see people taking my previous statements as my stance on the matter. Humbly T”

While many fans have reached out olive branches and forgiven him, others are less than enthusiastic.

David writes: “While I appreciate that you at least didn’t give a ‘I’m sorry if you were offended’ apology, I still don’t think you get what was wrong with your post.

“The problem wasn’t that you weren’t sure if Antifa had the right tactics,” he continues. “That’s something about which we could have a valid debate. Rather it was that you went on a bizarre rant using untrue Nazi propaganda about Jews. When called on it you double downed. Then you triple downed. At one point you got actively mad that you weren’t allowed to attack Jews without getting pushback.

“This is a ‘philosophy’ that has killed millions and you were spreading it. That’s not a weird misstatement of ‘the new Nazi wave must be stopped.’ That’s doing their work for them. You need to sit down and think about what you think you know and see if there’s actual evidence for it, or you’re going to continue to slander people and do harm.”

String Cheese Incident has so far been silent about Travis’s remarks, and hehas not responded to Westword’s messages for comment.

Kyle Harris quit making documentaries and started writing when he realized that he could tell hundreds of stories in the same amount of time it takes to make one movie. Now, hooked on the written word, he’s Westwords Culture Editor and writes about music and the arts.

Washington Watch: Trump’s Jewish enablers – The Jerusalem Post mobile website

As his reaction to the hate fest in Charlottesville two weeks ago continues to energize the racist, antisemitic Right, President Donald Trump needs to get a stronger message from the few Jews in his administration, big Jewish campaign donors and the Jews in his own family namely, daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner.

Instead, the weak response to Trumps outrageous reaction to Charlottesville makes all of the above his enablers as he continues to poke a presidential finger in the nations social and racial sores.

The Jewish enablers also include Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was slow to condemn the white supremacist and hate-group violence and who never criticized Trumps reaction.

Netanyahu seemed unperturbed when Trump saw a lot of fine people among the neo-Nazis, Klansmen and antisemites. It was also that way during last years campaign when Netanyahu, whose longstanding Republican allegiance was barely concealed, ignored Trumps dog whistles and courtship of the antisemites because the GOP candidate gave off strong anti-Muslim and pro-Israel vibes.

The message the prime minister and others in his coalition sent to American Jewry was we place a higher priority on not offending Trump than on defending you. It only widens the rift between Israel and the Diaspora and encourages Trumps coziness with the hate mongers.

Do they really believe that just because Trumps grandchildren and their parents are Jews he wouldnt turn on Israel if it suited him? Do they really think his legitimization of antisemitic, racist hate groups wont ultimately undercut Jewish security here? In this country, three out of four Jewish voters opposed Trump, and of the remaining 25% many were ultra-Orthodox, a group that has been too silent in the wake of Charlottesville.

Most leading Jewish organizations condemned the violence and the extremists. With the exception of the Conference of Presidents, the World Jewish Congress and the Zionists of America, they also rebuked Trump by name for seeing moral equivalence between the two sides.

Among the most outspoken was the ADL, which called on him to show moral leadership. The American Jewish Committee said Trumps moral equivalency comment blurs truth and gives pass to neo-Nazi perpetrators.

The Republican Jewish Coalition was slow to respond but eventually called on Trump by name to demonstrate greater moral clarity, reminding him there are no good Nazis.

Thats more than can be said for the groups principle benefactor, Adelson. Many non-Jewish Republicans were more courageous than Netanyahu and some Jewish leaders.

Senators Bob Corker, Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Jeff Flake, Cory Gardner, Tim Scott and Jerry Moran, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Mitt Romney and former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush and several House members were unafraid to criticize Trump by name.

Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz, a Jew and a Democrat, said, This president is not competent morally, politically or in terms… to lead the free world, and he called on Jewish members of Trumps cabinet to resign in protest.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Economic Adviser Gary Cohn and Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin, the highest ranking Jews in his administration, are staying put.

Only Shulkin spoke out publicly.

He said silence is not acceptable and denounced the Nazi and white supremacists.

Cohn reportedly told friends he was mortified by Trumps remarks, but apparently not enough to say so publicly or quit.

Hundreds of Mnuchins old Yale classmates wrote telling him he had a moral obligation to resign in protest, but he defended Trump, insisting hes not a bigot.

He contradicted the words the president spoke at Trump Tower even as his treasury secretary stood nearby, insisting despite evidence to the contrary his boss in no way, shape or form believes in moral equivalence between the hate groups and the counter demonstrators.

Mnuchin said the president needs highly talented men and women to be sure he makes important decisions [which] will benefit the American people. In other words, Mnuchin.

Are they really putting country above principle or is that just an excuse to hang on to their high positions? Are they enabling a morally corrupt president or trying to keep him from going entirely off the rails? Do they not understand that as enablers of this president they will forever bear the mark of Trump? Abe Foxman, the former leader of the Anti-Defamation League, said this is a Esther and Mordechai moment for son-in-law Kushner and his wife, Ivanka. It is time for the couple, among the most influential Jews in the country, to tell the president that he is embracing the kind of people who would want to get rid of his grandchildren and their mother and father for being Jews, Foxman said.

They may be Trumps most influential Jewish enablers, but they are not alone. He should be hearing, loudly and publicly, from top GOP contributors like Adelson, Bernard Marcus, Steve Wynn, Mel Sembler, Robert Kraft, Paul Singer and Lewis Eisenberg. They have the access and influence at the White House and throughout the party that few others enjoy, and they should be using it to speak truth to power.

Unveiling his new Afghanistan policy this week, Trump said his goal is not nation building but killing terrorists. He speaks a lot about fighting terrorism, especially if theyre Muslims, but he has a terrorism problem here at home and he is one of its most egregious enablers.

The Ku Klux Klan is the nations oldest active terrorist group, targeting blacks, Jews and other minorities. The Charlottesville rally was 102 years to the week after the lynching of Leo Frank, a Jewish businessman, in Marietta, Georgia, by a white mob.

Trump cannot lecture the Islamic world about doing away with extremists when he fails so miserably at home, where he sees many fine people among the domestic groups who went to Charlottesville to terrorize the people they hate. On Monday he said, our country needs to unify, to heal and to remain one nation, under God.

Mr. President, that job starts at home with you.

In response to the recent violence, racism and anti-Semitism on display at the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Anti-Defamation League of Arizona hosted a meeting of Jewish communal leaders to discuss the current environment in the state.

Although the Monday gathering was held the day before President Donald Trumps visit to Phoenix, Carlos Galindo-Elvira, director of the ADLs Arizona region, emphasized that the meeting was not meant to be political.

Chicago has one of the largest Jewish populations in the United States, and while there are select delis that have thrived here, the deli is not nearly as prevalent as it is in New York City, where bagels and pastrami on rye are as symbolic of the city as the Statue of Liberty.

With their new BYOB restaurant, Steingolds (1840 W. Irving Park Road), opening in North Center at the end of the month, Aaron Steingold (Table 52, Farmhouse Tavern) and his wife Elizabeth Abowd are seeking to both boost the relevance of New York City-style Jewish delis in Chicago and reinvent the deli with modern twists.

The first step in that reinvention is combining traditional Middle Eastern dishes with traditional deli fare. Abowd, who is Lebanese, was the inspiration for the merging of the cuisinesand because of the close proximity of Lebanon and Israel and the similarity between the countries foods, the menu additions make sense. Steingolds maternal side being Greek played a role in the merge as well.

Steingold believes that the inclusion of Middle Eastern foods will increase interest in the deli in Chicago.

We live in a neighborhood with a lot of great Middle Eastern food and we eat it often. Though we are firmly rooted in traditional Jewish deli cuisine, the highlights and influence of (Lebanon) are going to come out, he said.

Lamb and chicken shawarma, a Middle Eastern dish typically served rolled in pita, will be a weekly special at Steingolds. The pita itself will be homemade at the deli.

Labneh, a Lebanese cheese resembling Greek yogurt, will be served on latkes, which will be made with other root vegetables like parsnips, in addition to potatoes. The deli will also serve labneh in lieu of sour cream with its caviar service, one of the aspects Steingold is most excited foran interest which stems not only from his personal taste for it, but also from his Eastern European Ashkenazi roots.

Caviar is such a specialty item, and Ive been a huge fan for a long time, Steingold said. There arent a lot of places in Chicago to eat it. Its a very special occasion (when you get to eat it.) My heritage is Eastern Europeanmy fathers side is from Poland, Lithuania and Bulgaria. We are going to be offering the type of caviar that you cant just purchase at Whole Foods.

Caviar served on blinis, a common food eaten during holidays in Russia and surrounding countries, was popularized in the United States by Eastern European Jewish immigrants. Steingolds stock will come from Rare Tea Cellara wholesale company in Chicago selling rare food and drink items. In addition to caviar, Steingolds will also sell Rare Tea Cellars tea and spices.

Rare Tea Cellars isnt the only collaboration Steingolds will have in Chicago. The deli will work with Paulina Meat Market to offer an affordable lunch option, the Urban Achievera wink at one of Steingolds favorite films, The Big Lebowski. The special will include your choice of either a beef hot dog or a traditional wiener on a challah bun with caramelized onions, peppers and mustard. The $6 special also comes with a side of schmaltz potato chips and a Dr. Browns soda.

Steingold is heavily invested in the concept of approachability at his deli, both in price points and atmosphere. The restaurant will be counter service, but with attentive staff walking the floor ready to refill your glass, grab you a coffee or clear your tray. The presentation of the food itself is also an important aspect of service.

Ive worked in several casual dining restaurants and at almost all of them, I tried to bring a lot of elements of high-end, fine diningthe service techniques and models, while still being casual, Steingold said. When you eat here you will get a beautiful tray with your food and deli paper. Just little touches. Very casual counter service with touches of luxury is my goal here.

Steingold wants to reach both the customers coming in for a sit-down meal and a chat, and the commuters rushing to grab lunch on the way to the trainbeing only steps away from the Brown Line, he thought a lot about how to please them.

Of course, when youre not in a rush, Steingold wholeheartedly welcomes you to make his deli your own. He even wants to be present at your holidays and family meals. Besides looking to cater Seders (Passover feasts), weddings and bat and bar mitzvahs, Steingolds will offer a Thanksgiving package, which you can pick up the morning of the holiday. It includes a turkey and sideswith all the hard work done for you so you can enjoy a delicious meal without fret.

Though Thanksgiving isnt inherently religious, some may find it interesting that a Jewish deli would offer a special for the holiday. One look at the menu, however, shows that Steingolds is all about reaching every customer, Jewish or not. An embracement of the long-time stereotype of Jewish people loving Chinese food, particularly on Christian holidays when most other restaurants are shut down, is something Steingold plans to poke fun at around Christmastime.

Theres always some truth in stereotypes, he said. At Christmastime we are going to do a Peking duck special. I think its better to have fun with stereotypes; its easier to embrace the less negative ones than it is to fight them.

The Uncle Paul, Steingolds version of a BLT, may also cause some head scratching. Steingold hadnt planned on offering pork on the menu until he visited a deli in Brooklyn that did so.

If a Jewish deli in Brooklyn can have pork on the menu, surely in Chicago I can get away with it, Steingold said of the controversial menu item. The Uncle Paul is named after my Uncle and my brother-in-law, who is also named Paul. I think a lot of Jewish families have a Christian uncle that married into the family, so thats where we are offering bacon.

Family plays a big part in the rest of the menu items as well. Perhaps the most inventive sandwich is the Sister In Law.

My sister-in-law is Korean, and shes an amazing cook. Im pretty competitive when it comes to cooking, and she blew me out of the water, he said. (The sandwich) is kind of a play on the Reuben, but using kimchi as the sauerkraut and were also using a hot Chinese mustard. I think people are going to be pretty excited about it.

Besides their names, Steingold will borrow a few other things from his family. The matzo ball soup is his great-grandmothers recipe, and the brisket, which uses cola spices, is a tribute to his grandmother, who cooked her brisket in Pepsi. His fathers nannys fried chicken is also on the menu and speaks to Steingolds southern upbringing.

Growing up Jewish in Greensboro, North Carolina was a unique experience. Being Jewish in the South is a huge part of the menu, he said.

For many of us who grew up eating matzo ball soup and our mothers perfected brisket recipe, Steingolds serves as a focal point for both nostalgia and ideals of the American Jewish community. But with modern menu additions and global influence, Steingolds refuses to be put in a corner.

We want to appeal to everyone, Steingold said. We want to appeal to the grandmother that goes to temple every Friday night and the guy that comes to pick a bong up at the head shop next door. If you can get you what you want and get it fast, or be able to order a bottle of champagne and caviar and sit here for five hours, I love that as well. I hope people do both.

Steingolds is set to open Aug. 29.

Adopt-A-Nazi is Jewish group’s answer to ‘Patriot Prayer’ rally – Fox News

A Jewish association in San Francisco has launched an Adopt-a-Nazi fundraising campaign in opposition to a free speech rally taking place in the city next weekend.

The Jewish Bar Association of San Francisco, JBASF, has already raised more than $100,000 with its GoFundMe campaign titled Adopt-a-Nazi (Not Really), NBC News reported. The campaign was set up in protest of the upcoming Patriot Prayers Freedom Rally San Francisco and is raising money for the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The bar association, which reportedly fears a repeat of the violence seen in Charlottesville, Va., during a rally earlier this month, is asking people to donate $100 for every marcher expected to show up to Crissy Field on Saturday.

Organizers of the Patriot Prayer rallies– set for Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. local time — say they are not an alt-right or white nationalist group. Joey Gibson, the Patriot Prayers leader, says the group supports freedom, love and peace.

A Facebook message by Patriot Prayer states that no extremists will be allowed in to its Liberty Weekend events. It continues: No Nazis, Communists, KKK, Antifa, white supremacists, i.e. or white nationalists.

Cody Harris, a JBASF board member, told NBC he was “repulsed” by the violence displayed at the Charlottesville rally that was in protest of the removal of a Confederate statue. The violence at the rally led to three deaths — one woman who died after she was hit by a car and two police officers whose helicopter crashed.

“White nationalists may feel emboldened, but they will never prevail,” Harris said. “There are far more decent people dedicated to this countrys founding creed than there are white nationalists.

Bomb Threat Evacuates Michigan Jewish Organization – Forward

Google Maps (JTA) A bomb threat called in to a Jewish agency in Ann Arbor, Michigan, forced the evacuation of the building.

In fact, I go out of my way to behave quite the opposite as a mother: I proudly aspire to be underbearing, The boys are back in school this week, which means I am privy to a lot more parenting conversations that I often feel I have to slowly back away from for fear of exposing my laissez-faire style.

Reform, Conservative, and Reconstructionist movements they will not arrange the annual conference call ahead of Jewish High Holidays WASHINGTON Organizations representing three Jewish religious denominations that together represent the vast majority of American Jewry declaredon Wednesdaythat they would not arrange a conference call with President Donald Trump ahead of the Jewish High Holidays this year and would also not participate in such a call if it takes place. During Barack Obama’s eight years as president, such a call took place every year around Rosh Hashana, which this year begins on the evening of September 20. In a statement signed by leading rabbis from all three of the denominations, but not Orthodox representatives, the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist movements said: “We have concluded that President Trumps statements during and after the tragic events in Charlottesville are so lacking in moral leadership and empathy for the victims of racial and religious hatred that we cannot organize such a call this year.” Trump had been sharply criticized for his initial comments blaming “many sides” for the violence in Charlottesville earlier this month around protests by far-right wing demonstrators. They must be roundly condemned at all levels.” It should be noted that the White House had not publicly expressed any intention prior to the release of the denomination’s statement to holda conference call with the Jewish community around the High Holidays this year.

Travis wrote the following on Facebook on Friday, August 18: “The Jewish banking agenda is fairly irrefutable ..do you think I’m anti Semitic for saying so? But the Zionist banking cartel is a thing… let me know if you can refute its existence.” After being asked, “Travis, WTF is wrong with you?,” he replied: “How am I evil all of a sudden? I abhor killing millions of people. I abhor the Nazi sentiment. I love Jews. Powerful powerful people. I think Trump is a living human piece of shit. I also think the Zionist Banking cartel is a thing. Any time anyone says Jews have done something in concert that is anything other than glowing citizens they get shat upon. Do you have evidence there isn’t a banking cartel that is largely run by jews? I’ll stop saying this if someone will present that evidence. And mind you, I am not bent on vilifying jews by pointing out this business cartel. It could have been anyone. [Smily face emoji].” As more people rejected Travis’s opinions, he wrote that he felt attacked and victimized for espousing peace, waxed nostalgic about back when hippies were pacifists, and blamed Hitler’s rise to power on how nobody loved the Nazi leader. Please accept my apology and recognition of error.” And he came to Facebook again on Monday, to apologize again: “I feel compelled to put out another apology and recognition of my extreme ignorance and shame regarding my previous statements about Jewish banking. Humbly T” While many fans have reached out olive branches and forgiven him, others are less than enthusiastic. You need to sit down and think about what you think you know and see if there’s actual evidence for it, or you’re going to continue to slander people and do harm.” String Cheese Incident has so far been silent about Travis’s remarks, and hehas not responded to Westword’s messages for comment.

Share on facebook

Valley Jewish organizations respond to recent violence on eve of Trump visit – Jewish News of Greater Phoenix

Modern meets traditional at Steingold’s, new Jewish deli in North Center – Chicago Tribune

29. @AudreyGorden | agorden@redeyechicago.com
