Pollock claims dodging failure reminders will end Proteas' 23-year WC win drought

Former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock has claimed that the current squad is going to have to dodge the reminders of failing to win a knockout game in 23 years that would come falling once the team reaches the last-eight round of the World Cup this year.

And as much as the current team would be trying to ignore it, the former South African all-rounder has said that it’s only a matter of time before the baggage is rehashed, News.com.au reported.

Pollock said that once South Africa gets into the knock out stages all the reminders would come -from the press, from teams, so he added that they’re going to have to try and dodge that.

Pollock claimed that it’s a bit unfortunate because it’s baggage that comes from the past and some of these guys weren’t involved at all.

He added that one always feel it would be nice to let them get on and produce the best skills they can in the tournament and not have to worry about all that, but insisted that opposition teams would use it to their advantage and they are going to have to deal with that.

Pollock said that hopefully from South Africa’s perspective this can be the team that puts it to bed.

Judging by South Africa’s poor performance against India it’s difficult to see them going on to win the trophy, but Pollock insists he has a good feeling about their chances as long as their key players perform, starting against the West Indies at the SCG on Friday.

New Bhoys will handle theatre of noise of Parkhead on a European night, says Celtic skipper Scott Brown

Scott Brown has warned Celtic’s new Bhoys to prepare for the shock and awe of a European baptism of fire tonight against Inter Milan.

Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven could be in the frame to play some part of the crucial Europa League clash at a sell-out Parkhead.

But the Celtic skipper is convinced the former Dundee United stars will shine on the big stage just two weeks after ther arrived from Tannadice

Hoops boss Ronny Deila has hinted that he could be prepared to throw at least one of them into the fray against the Italians this evening.

And Brown has warned them they cannot afford to let the knockout game against the Serie A side pass them by.

“There is a reason they were brought to Celtic and that is because they are good enough,” he said.

“I just said to them that you can’t think about it too much. You can’t be in awe of them.

“They have been brought to the club to play in games like this so now is the time to go out and do it.

“They will enjoy it. The atmosphere with 60,000 inside the stadium on a big European night is like nothing they will have experienced before.

“But they can’t afford to stop and take it in. They are here because the manager knows they can do a job.

TN, Vidarbha ready for a grudge match

TN v Vidarbha, Ranji Trophy 2014-15, quarter-final, Jaipur February 15, 2015

With more than 700 runs in this season already, Abhinav Mukund has led Tamil Nadu’s batting ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Match facts

February 16-20, 2015 Start time 0930 IST

Big picture

In any other season, a knockout game between Tamil Nadu and Vidarbha would have seemed a face-off between perennial underachievers and surprise entrants. But there’s more to it this year. This season, the contest is likely to be grudge match due to the presence of S Badrinath in the Vidarbha camp.

The domestic stalwart switched allegiance to Vidarbha from his home team, Tamil Nadu, ahead of the season. And he has made a statement. Not only by piling on runs in his trademark fashion but also by helping Vidarbha make it to the knockouts for the first time in almost two decades.

Vidarbha’s move to revamp their core group by bringing in Paras Mhambrey as coach and Badrinath, Ganesh Satish and Rakesh Dhurv as professionals paid rich dividends as the team exceeded all the expectations by finishing third in Group B.

Tamil Nadu were able to capitalise on their strategy of preparing turning tracks for home games. Their spin troika of Malolan Rangarajan, Rahil Shah and Aushik Srinivas exploited the conditions that were tailormade for them, while Abhinav Mukund, Dinesh Karthik and siblings B Aparajith and B Indrajith have ensured Badrinath’s absence wasn’t felt too much. M Vijay’s century in the last game was also a boost for Tamil Nadu before the knockout stage.

It would be interesting to see which of the two teams uses the seamer-friendly conditions in Jaipur to their advantage.

snopes.com: Knockout Game Turns Deadly

There is a story bouncing around blogdom about a 61 year-old woman shooting and killing two attackers who were playing the ‘knockout game’. All web searches bring back the same story; all from various blogs. The woman’s name is Beulah Montgomery.

Beulah Montgomery, who just turned 60 yesterday, says she was walking home after purchasing lottery tickets when she says a group of teens, 7 of them, approached her. Montgomery initally thought they were going to attempt to steal her purse but says she was instead hit by one of the individuals as a second attempted to hit her. That’s when

“All I could feel was pain and I said to myself I had made it to 60 and I wanted to at least see 61,” she recalled. “Then I started praying and I asked the Lord to guide my hands” Montgomery says she then reached into her purse and and shot in the direction of the teens and they started to flee. However two of them didn’t make without being hit.

Beulah who is a member of her local neighborhood watch said she has always carried a gun after being mugged once before. “Its a shame you can’t walk through your own neighborhood where you are supposed to feel safe without being assulted and mistreated,” she continues. “I purchased the gun hoping I would never have to use it, but I’m glad to still be in the land of the living.”

The same cannot be said for her two victims, Montgomery fired 5 times hitting one of the teens in the chest and the other in the stomach. Because of their age police are not releasing the names at this time, but are saying the teens died as a result of the gun shot wounds. Police are still looking for the others teens who were apart of the group. Witnesses say they ran off after the gun shots were fired.

Police have not yet charged Montgomery, who has no prior arrests, but she was detained and later released.

This is the latest story in what seems to be a string of similar incidents happening over the US where teens are playing something called the “knockout game” where they approach strangers and attempt to knock them out with one punch.

The satirical National Report web site published a similar fictional article about a 93-year-old woman named Gladis Bennett at the same time this piece was circulating.
