Rep. Conyers: Farrakhan's speech 'racist, anti-Semitic'

DETROIT, May 24 (UPI) — U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., has described remarks made by Louis Farrakhan in a Detroit speech as “unacceptable racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic.”

In a statement released Thursday, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee said Farrakhan’s “important charitable work” does not excuse what he said in his speech last week, the Detroit Free Press reported. Conyers was at the speech by the Nation of Islam leader in a Detroit church, Fellowship Chapel, last Friday.

The Free Press reported Farrakhan referred to “Satanic Jews” and the “synagogue of Satan” and said President Barack Obama has “surrounded himself with Satan.”

“Farrakhan made unacceptable racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic statements, which I condemn in the strongest possible terms,” Conyers said. “It was my expectation that Minister Farrakhan’s speech would focus on the many challenges facing the city of Detroit. In previous days, he had discussed efforts to revitalize our city by purchasing property and investing in blighted neighborhoods. Regrettably, he used this opportunity to promote views that have no place in civilized discourse.”

The Anti-Defamation League condemned Farrakhan’s remarks in a statement issued Tuesday.

Louis Farrakhan blasts emergency management, calls on blacks to buy up Detroit property

DETROIT, MI — Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam is speaking in Detroit today, pressing African Americans to work together to purchase and revitalize vacant buildings in the city.

Farrakhan spoke to Detroit City Council this morning and plans another speech at Fellowship Chapel this evening.

The Nation of Islam was founded in Detroit in the 1930s.

“We come back at a time when there’s great despair among the inhabitants of the city of Detroit,” Farrakhan said.

He blasted the state’s appointment of an unelected emergency manager and spoke of “buzzards” seeking to profit from the city’s decline.

“I don’t know what Democracy really means if you can be given the right to vote and then somebody can take it away and make your vote null and void,” Farrakhan said.

“… Wherever there’s a carcass, there’s always a buzzard somewhere… So Downtown is being bought up. It seems to be coming along very good. But as you drive through Detroit, it’s like a wasteland. But wastelands always give opportunity to those who have vision. While the buzzards want to eat the carrion… there are those who want to see the city come back to life.”

Referring heavily to scripture, he spoke of building trust and cooperation among the city’s black population to reinvest in neglected property.

“After a while, every one of us will have a stake in the city,” he said. “… Don’t despair, for the darkest hour is just before the dawn.”

Farrakhan is scheduled to speak again Friday night at Fellowship Chapel, 7707 W. Outer Drive. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Nation of Islam's Louis Farrakhan wants to rebuild Detroit; he'll meet City Council, speak at church

DETROIT, MI – Minister Louis Farrakhan, leader of The Nation of Islam, is expected to be in Detroit this week to meet Detroit City Council Members and speak at Fellowship Chapel on the city’s west side.

Farrakhan, according to the Michigan Chronicle, is expected to be in Detroit for two days: Thursday and Friday.

Farrakhan’s speech Friday at Fellowship Chapel is open to the public. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; the program begins at 7 p.m. The church is located at 7707 W. Outer Drive.

For more information, the Chronicle reports that those interested should contact Muhammad Mosque No. One at (313) 283-7245, or (313) 713-5181.

The Michigan Chronicle posted comments, reportedly from Farrakhan, on its website that address the state of Detroit and the hardships the city faces.

An excerpt from the report: “Detroit is where the Nation of Islam started. Detroit is almost considered now, a dead city. So we’ll come back to Detroit where we began and look at the condition of Detroit, pool our resources and try to buy properties in Detroit and start rebuilding one of the greatest cities in America where we’re concerned.”

The Nation of Islam was founded in Detroit in the 1930s by Wallace Fard Muhammad. One of his disciples was Elijah Muhammad, who led The Nation of Islam from 1934 until his death in 1975.

Eliijah Muhammad was a mentor to Malcolm X, whose wife, Betty Shabazz (born Betty Dean Sanders), grew up in Detroit.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Under the 'fair use' rule of copyright law, an author may make limited use of another author's work without asking permission. Fair use is based on the belief that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted materials for purposes of commentary and criticism. The fair use privilege is perhaps the most significant limitation on a copyright owner's exclusive rights.

Fair use as described at 17 U.S.C. Section 107:

"Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phono-records or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:

  • (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for or nonprofit educational purposes,
  • (2) the nature of the copyrighted work,
  • (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and
  • (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work."
