5 fun AIs that let you play with images in unexpected ways – Memeburn

By Julia Breakey on 27 June, 2017 Share

The thought of AI can be scary, and it would be rational for the inevitability of the singularity to make you anxious.

But sometimes its best to ignore the dark cloud that is the unknown future to play with some cool AI-powered software that messes with images/sketches to create funny and cool-looking things. Its time to enter uncanny valley.

Pix2Pix is the brainchild of Dutch Public Broadcaster NPO, and it uses hundreds of drawings and photographs of presenter Lara Rense to create a neural system that lets you create a realistic photo of her from a crude sketch.

Of course, this only works well if youre a) a good artist and b) care enough to try. Otherwise, its just a fun tool to draw terrible people and watch them become fodder for the next big horror movie.

Pix2Pix works best on Google Chrome, according to its creators.

Hallucinogenic crocodile

DeepDream generates dreams in the same way dentists generate happiness, but dont let that deter you. The algorithm, made by Google, was initially created to let scientists and engineers understand what a neural network was doing when it looked at a given image.

Now its mostly used for psychedelic and abstract art, or, as I like to call it, a sometimes beautiful, always terrifying form of hell.

Its counterpart DeepStyle transforms images into paintings, but thats way less fun than fish for arms and meerkats for eyes.

Microsofts CaptionBot is hardly the most exciting on this list, but it highlights just how far machine-learning has come in identifying images. The algorithm uses Computer Vision and Natural language to describe the contents of an image and it even has the ability to recognise famous faces.

The bots siblings include the likes of How Old Do I Look, Are You Twins, My Moustache, What Dog, and Celebs Like Me.

Edges2Cats has the same premise as Pix2Pix, except instead of a human youre drawing a cat. The software isnt flawless (it often takes a few tries to process without errors), but the results are so entertaining you may just overlook it.

Edges2Cats became somewhat of a meme back in February, when Twitter users used #edges2cats to spread their lovable creations.

Perhaps most impressive was @EimhinMcNamaras animation, exemplifying what we can do when humans and technology work together.

Speaking of humans and tech working together: Sketch-RNN is a program that is designed to help you draw. Trained on millions of sketches from Googles Quick, Draw!game (another bit of fun to be had with AI), the demo gives you a model to draw and guesses how it should be finished.

Sometimes it works, and sometimes you can get so caught up in wanting to draw that you may as well be using Microsoft Paint. Or that may just be me.

The program works best on desktop, and will use 5MB of data for every model loaded.

Pix2Pix is another good web tool for making horrifying autofill images – The Verge

Googles open-source machine learning project Tensorflow is probably used all the time for helpful things that advance the cause of mankind or something. But in my experience, what it has been best used for is making horrifying auto-generated images out of simple line drawings. Im referring to edges2cats, which turned any line drawing into a cat. It was a whole thing! Everyone was trying it out, then posting pictures of really demented cats to Twitter for others to laugh at.

Today the same thing has happened, except its not cats. Its human heads. And instead of Googles project, Dutch Public Broadcaster NPO created its own artificial intelligence system that had only been fed thousands of images of one of its anchors, Lara Rense. As reported by the popular Tumblr prostheticknowledge, the web tool is called Pix2Pix.

You draw a face, and Pix2Pix uses a neural network to create what looks like an approximation of an oil painting of that face (made up of pieces of Renses face). Obviously the results mostly look like monsters, especially the pig-baby monster from the first season of American Horror Story. Also thumbs.

The auto-detected edges of your line drawing are probably only helpful if you are really good at drawing and can draw a lifelike face. For example, this is a total disaster, by me:

Heres another total disaster, by The Verge news editor Kwame Opam:

My editor Chris Plante drew a portrait of my robot son Klav, who you might remember from a joke from nearly a year ago, but I dont know how loyal you are to this website:

Our social media manager and resident cartoonist Dami Lee made the guy from Pans Labyrinth:

Anyway, have fun! You can read more about the project on the radio stations website, but the Google translation of the Dutch is kind of rough.

Fair Use Disclaimer

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Under the 'fair use' rule of copyright law, an author may make limited use of another author's work without asking permission. Fair use is based on the belief that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted materials for purposes of commentary and criticism. The fair use privilege is perhaps the most significant limitation on a copyright owner's exclusive rights.

Fair use as described at 17 U.S.C. Section 107:

"Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phono-records or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:

  • (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for or nonprofit educational purposes,
  • (2) the nature of the copyrighted work,
  • (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and
  • (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work."
