George Zimmerman, who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, was arraigned at 1:30 p.m. today in a Florida courtroom.

Update at 3:30 p.m. ET: Zimmerman’s not-guilty plea was accepted during his arraignment, MSNBCreports. Seminole County Judge Kenneth R. Lester set Zimmerman’s next court date for 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 8. At that “docket sounding”, a trial date will be set unless Zimmerman’s attorney asks for another continuance, according to the news station.

Update at noon ET: Zimmerman’s lawyer, Mark O’Mara, filed a motion to have more time to ready his defense and a waiver of a speedy trial, according to court documents. Zimmerman needs “additional time to prepare” and realizes this may prolong his case, the papers day.

Zimmerman, who is a white Hispanic, says he shot Trayvon in self-defense.

The city’ s new interim police chief, Richard Myers, began work last Friday. His appointment comes after former chief Bill Lee temporarily vacated the post. Lee was strongly criticized for his handling of the investigation.

ATLANTA George Zimmerman has waived his right to a speedy trial, arguing to a Florida court that he needs more time to prepare. The move means it could be October at the earliest _ and likely much later _ before the start of his second-degree murder trial.

Zimmerman’s intentions were outlined in two brief documents that Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, filed Tuesday in Seminole County, Fla., circuit court. The actions did not come as a surprise to legal experts, who said such moves are common even in less-complex and lower-profile felony cases.

Florida’s rules of criminal procedure require that suspects charged with a felony be brought to trial within 175 days of their arrest, unless those defendants ask that the right be waived. Zimmerman turned himself in to authorities on April 11, charged in the killing of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who was walking in Zimmerman’s neighborhood, and whom Zimmerman considered to be suspicious.

Zimmerman, 28, was released from jail after posting $150,000 bond. He admits he shot Martin, 17, but claims he did so in self-defense. He has pleaded not guilty in court documents, making his appearance unnecessary at a Tuesday arraignment hearing.

Law enforcement officials’ initial reluctance to arrest Zimmerman sparked a national outcry, with many observers suspecting that Zimmerman, who is half white and half Latino, was given a break because of his race, and the race of the young man he fatally shot.

Kenneth B. Nunn, a professor and criminal law expert at the University of Florida, said that prosecutors are likely pleased to have the extra time, given the expert witnesses to line up, police audiotapes to analyze and other details to sort out. Nunn said he wouldn’t be surprised if the trial started sometime in the spring of 2013.

The shooting has been a major story for American news media this spring, with interest generated by the Internet and social media as well.

It is not clear whether the public’s passion for the case will be sustained over many months, but another racially charged trial _ that of the officers charged with beating black Los Angeles motorist Rodney King _ has been a somewhat inescapable reference point.

A jury’s April 1992 acquittal of the police officers who had been captured on tape beating King more than a year earlier sparked the deadly Los Angeles riots. The African-American activist Al Sharpton marked the 20th anniversary of the riots last month with a call for a peaceful response to the Martin verdict.

SANFORD, Fla. The judge overseeing the Trayvon Martin shooting case accepted George Zimmerman’s not guilty plea for his second-degree murder charge at an arraignment hearing Tuesday.

The arraignment was essentially a formality after Zimmerman waived his right to appear at the hearing and entered a written plea of not guilty last month.

Zimmerman, his attorney and the lead prosecutor did not attend the arraignment that lasted less than a minute.

Seminole Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester scheduled the next hearing for the case on Aug. 8, when a trial date is expected to be set.

Zimmerman, 28, was released on $150,000 bail last month and is living at an undisclosed location, possibly outside the state of Florida.

Also Tuesday, court officials unsealed documents revealing Zimmerman has waived his right to a speedy trial.

Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, filed the waiver Monday while also submitting a second motion asking Seminole Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester for more time to prepare for the case.

The prosecution did not object to O’Mara’s request.

Both motions are relatively routine. Under Florida law, Zimmerman was entitled to a trial within 175 days of his April 11 second-degree murder charge.

Defendants often waive this right to allow their attorneys to more thoroughly prepare for their defense.

The parents of 17 year old Trayvon Martin arrived in London this morning, to thank the British people who have lent their support.

Among the many letters of condolence which they received was one from Doreen Lawrence, whose own son was killed in a racist attack in South London 19 years ago. The two families met today, at the memorial to Stephen’s death, united by a search for meaning, amid their personal grief.

A day to look back, as well as forward: a reminder of a young man’s killing that has become as totemic for America as Stephen Lawrence’s death was in Britain.

Trayvon’s story

For the Martins, their grief is still raw: it’s been barely two months since the night when their son walked through a gated community in Sanford, Florida and was challenged by neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. There was a confrontation. Screaming. Gunshots. By 7.25pm, Trayvon Martin, armed only with a packet of Skittles and a soft drink, was killed.

The initial police investigation was so cursory, that Zimmerman was barely asked any questions about the shooting, his alleged injuries barely examined, charges never brought. Police said there was no evidence to disprove his claim that he shot Martin in self-defence.

Amid the growing backlash, and the growing distress of the black community, hundreds of thousands of people began signing an online petition demanding Zimmerman’s arrest. Tapes of the 911 calls made on the night of the shooting emerged in the media. Finally the Justice Department launched its own investigation.

Barely a month after the shooting, Trayvon Martin had become a cause: a symbol not just of America’s dysfunctional relationship with race, and guns, but a powerful political statement. “I am Trayvon Martin” became a nationwide slogan, emblazoned on banners, T-shirts, bumper stickers.

Thousands of people took to the streets, holding rallies around the country to demand “Justice for Trayvon”. They wore hoodies, in tribute to the one the teenager was wearing the night he was shot: some brandished bags of Skittles. President Obama spoke publicly for the first time, calling for some national soul searching: “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon”, he said.

The hoodie swiftly became a symbol in itself, worn by members of Congress, sporting stars, school kids. The rallies became known as the ‘Million Hoodie March’.

JOHANNESBURG: Two young models – one of them white, the other black – from a generation too young to have personal memories of apartheid, have exposed South Africa’s racist underbelly in recent days with a series of angry tweets.

The seemingly casual racist remarks by the models suggest that some members of South Africa’s ”born free” generation, who grew up after the end of apartheid, nonetheless may sport toxic attitudes.

Late last week, Jessica Leandra Dos Santos, a 20-year-old blonde model who says her days ”revolve around being kind”, sent a tweet that was anything but.

Using a highly offensive racial epithet – kaffir – known in South Africa as the K-word, Dos Santos told more than 6000 followers that she had just ”taken on” an ”arrogant and disrespectful” black man in a supermarket. ”Should have punched him, should have,” her tweet ended.

By hitting send, she torpedoed her reputation, a valuable sponsorship and a modelling award that was handed to her last year by a men’s magazine.

In an apology published the next day, Dos Santos said she was angry when she tweeted, claiming that the man in the supermarket had sexually harassed her.

”I tweeted rather irresponsibly last night using a harsh and unkind word about the gentleman who had confronted me with sexual remarks and sounds. Please do understand that I was acting in pure anger and frustration at the time and although we know this is no excuse, it is a lesson learnt and again I am sincerely apologetic.”

Students were able to learn about Palestinian conflict and the Israeli Apartheid Wall last week when Cal Poly Pomonas Muslim Student Association hosted its annual Palestine Awareness Week.

The weeks events started off with the Apartheid Wall which was to be on display in the University Park Monday through Friday, but the wall was only kept up through Wednesday as it was needed at another school.

The wall, which travels between several Southern California universities, displayed a variety of facts explaining current issues dealing with Palestine occupation.

MSA students took shifts to stand by the wall and help explain what was depicted to passers-by who would take the time to stop and look at the large display.

The wall was a passive type of protest as a way to display information and better inform CPP students about what is really going on, according to fifth-year Manufacturing Engineering student Jelani Haider who as MSAs brothers chair, helped with the weeks events.

I realized what type of world we live in, said Haider. Everyone is consumed in their own reality and sometimes that will never change, but sometimes people will stop and get out of what theyre consumed with. Whether that means they agree or disagree, at least they took the time to stop and look.

The wall is a mock Apartheid Wall, which resembles the Apartheid Wall being built by the State of Israel that separates Israel and Palestine along the West Bank. The building of the wall is a very controversial subject between Israel and Palestine in regards to arguments of Israel occupation of prior Palestinian lands.

Not only did MSA students stand by waiting to inform CPP students about the issues going on in Palestine, but students from CPPs organization of Jewish students, Hillel, also had a board posted with Ask us about the wall written on it, and students there answered questions about the controversial topic.

Hillel President, Orr Karny explained that their goal is not to argue with MSAs presentation of facts, but to be there to logically show both sides of the situations so students can be better informed.

The real important issue is to inform and make sure people know whats going on, because otherwise they get skewed either way, said Karny. Its great when people support Israel. Its great when people support Palestine, but we need to make sure that when people believe in it, they believe for the right reasons. They need to look at the reasons otherwise; were not making any logical conclusions.

For more than 20 years, the legendary singer has been celebrated globally for his powerful vocals and universal messages of freedom and human kindness. He has toured the world extensively and collaborated with major music stars such as Sting, Paul Simon and Dave Matthews.

But despite all his success and international acclaim, Mahlasela still resides in Mamelodi, the small township northeast of Pretoria where he grew up and nurtured his passion and talent for music.

He says it all started for him here.

“Quite a lot of inspirations and also some of the songs that I wrote, I penned them here in Mamelodi,” says Mahlasela, who is known in South Africa as “The Voice.” “I still have very strong connections with this place,” he adds. “I feel rooted and connected to this place, I love it.”

A humble star, Mahlaselas roots are reflected in his songs and lyrics, many written during one of the toughest times in South Africas history — the fight against apartheid.

DURHAM, N.C. — Advanced high-speed gene-sequencing has been used in the clinical setting to find diagnoses for seven children out of a dozen who were experiencing developmental delays and congenital abnormalities for mysterious reasons.

“I thought if we could obtain even a couple of relatively secure diagnoses out of the 12 patients, that would prove the value of deploying sequencing approaches systematically in patients with unknown but apparently genetic conditions,” said David Goldstein, Ph.D., director of the Duke Center for Human Genome Variation and professor of molecular genetics and microbiology.

“Few sequencing studies have approached the problem as we did, taking a very heterogeneous group of patients,” Goldstein said. “Getting a likely diagnosis about half of the time is quite stunning and strongly motivates next-generation sequencing for all patients that fail to get a genetic diagnosis through traditional testing.”

The research team used next-generation sequencing, a new technology that can rapidly read a person’s entire genome or just their exome, the sections of DNA that make the proteins, which direct physiological activities. The cost of such sequencing is becoming lower, making it feasible to do the study in a clinical setting.

The work was published online on May 8, in the Journal of Medical Genetics.

“There are up to 50,000 live births in America each year with the children having features of developmental delays, intellectual disabilities or congenital abnormalities similar to those we studied,” said Vandana Shashi, M.D., co-author and associate professor of pediatrics in the Duke Center for Human Genetics. “Many of these children remain without diagnoses and we could systematically try to help identify a cause.”

Shashi said families involved with the study often expressed relief just to have a diagnosis, even when a condition remained difficult or impossible to treat.

“Just knowing what was causing the problem took away the mystery, which gives families some comfort,” Shashi said.

Sequencing works in clinical setting to help — finally — get a diagnosis

TERRE HAUTE An $8,900 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation has led to the planting of 100 trees on four higher-education campuses in Vigo County, as well as a university site in Clay County.

The 100 trees are to commemorate Duke Energys Century of Service and Innovation, a yearlong celebration of our Indiana operating companys 100 years of service, said Rick Burger, Duke Energy Indiana west district manager.

We take a lot of pride in our communities and this is just one way that we can make that happen, Burger added.

The grant was given to TREES Inc., an all-volunteer urban forest council. The grant covered the cost of planting 25 trees each on the campus of Indiana State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, St. Mary-of-the-Wood College and Ivy Tech Community College.

They have been very good to us from the first day and this is a special gift to have 100 new trees in the community, Joy Sacopulos, founding member of the 22-year-old TREES Inc., said of the Duke Energy grant.

All but one of the trees had been planted as of Monday, Sacopulos said.

William Kincius, senior manager of landscape and ground services at Rose-Hulman, said 20 weeping cherry trees and five tulip poplar trees were planted on campus by student volunteers.

The weeping cherry trees will have pink blossoms and produce small cherries, which are not for human consumption, Kincius said. Weeping cherry trees were selected in acknowledgment of Rose-Hulmans relationship with the Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan. The country of Japan is also celebrating the 100th anniversary of donated trees planted in 1912 in Washington, D.C.

Any cherry trees we could plant this year would be appropriate, Kincius said.

Tulip poplar trees are the state tree and native to Indiana.

DURHAM A majority of North Carolinians voted Tuesday in favor of a Constitutional amendment that recognizes the marriage of a man and woman as the only valid domestic union in North Carolina, with a 61 percent to 38 percent victory with 85 of the states 100 counties reporting.

Locally, Orange and Durham counties voted overwhelming against Amendment One, with 78.9 percent against it in Orange County and 69.7 percent against it in Durham County. Person County voted 72.4 percent for the amendment.

The Rev. C.J. Bordeaux, senior pastor of Gorman Baptist Church in Durham, watched returns Tuesday night in Raleigh with Vote for Marriage NC, the largest pro-amendment group in the state.

Bordeaux said theyre very humble and grateful for the amendments passing.

Im proud North Carolinians stood their ground and voted their conscience, he said. Now the people have decided, and its not up to a radical judge. Bordeaux said he heard misrepresentations from the opposing side, and said that if the amendment had not passed, a radical judge could have overturned the existing state law.

Im not going to gloat on it. We cast our ballot. Its a very democratic way of going about it, and were proud of it, he said.

Gorman Baptist Church, which Bordeaux described as Southern Baptist, fundamental and conservative, provided about 2,000 Vote For Amendment One signs for its congregants. He thinks about half of those were stolen from yards, which bothered him.

Ive had talks with those who opposed me, and I tell folks youre certainly entitled to your opinion. They want us to be tolerant of their opinions, not ours, he said.

Members of a white supremacist skinhead group called American Front trained with AK-47s, shotguns and explosives at a fortified compound in central Florida to prepare for what its reputed leader believed to be an inevitable race war, prosecutors said Tuesday.

According to court documents, members of American Front discussed acts of violence that included causing a disturbance at City Hall in Orlando, shooting at a houseand attacking an anti-racist skinhead group.

At least 10 members of the group, which authorities described as a militia-styled, anti-Semitic domestic terrorist organization, have been arrested in Florida since the weekend, including at least three people on Tuesday.

The felony arrest charges include paramilitary training, attempting to shoot into an occupied dwelling, and evidence of prejudices while committing an offense. The last charge falls under Florida’s hate-crimes law.

This investigation is a result of our ongoing partnership with local law enforcement and federal agencies in a concentrated effort to stamp out hate crime in our community, Ninth Circuit State Attorney Lawson Lamar said in a statement Tuesday.

His office said he would not comment further on the case because the investigation is ongoing.

According to a court statement from Orange County Sheriffs Deputy Kelly Boaz filed in support of an arrest warrant, the group was led by Marcus Faella, 39, of St. Cloud, Fla. He and his wife, Patricia Faella, 36, were among those arrested over the weekend.

WFTV has learned police have charged another person in connection with an alleged hate group operating out of Osceola County.

Verlin Lewis was taken into custody Wednesday in Washington County in the panhandle.

Others who were charged include Marcus Faella, 39; Patricia Faella, 36; Paul Willard Jackson, 25; Kent Ryan McLellan, 22; Diane Stephanie Stevens, 28; Mark McGowan Jr., 29; Jennifer McGowan, 25; Richard Adam Stockdale, 23; Dustin Ryan Perry, 20;and Christopher John Brooks, 26. All were charged with hate crimes.

According to the police affidavit, Marcus Faella is a member of a group called American Front (AF), a militia-styled, anti-Semitic, white supremacist, skinhead organization.

The arrests were made after investigators uncovered plots to create violent chaos in central Florida, including targets like Orlando City Hall, so the media would report on it and bring new members.”The information came from an informant who had infiltrated the group for two years, reporting everything he saw back to the FBI.

The affidavit claims, Faella has been planning and preparing the AF for what he believes to be an inevitable race war.

WFTV spent Wednesday following the money trail to find out if anyone is footing the bills for the group.

KISSIMMEE, Fla., May 7 (UPI) — Seven people are charged with hate crimes in Florida after an investigation into the American Front white supremacist group, officials said.

Local directors of the organization Marcus Faella, Patricia Faella and Mark McGowan were arrested Friday on several charges including providing paramilitary training, the Orange-Osceola County State’s Attorney’s Office said. Officials described the American Front as a “domestic terrorist organization.”

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office helped the FBI arrest the Faellas at their home Friday in a rural area east of Holopaw, Fla., the Orlando Sentinel reported Monday.

“We’ve been aware of Marcus Faella since 1993 when he was a member of the Confederate Hammerskins, a violent skin head group, and head of the Melbourne chapter,” Southern Poverty Law Center spokesman Mark Potok told the newspaper.

Jennifer McGowan, Diane Stevens, Kent McLellan and Paul Jackson were also arrested.

The newspaper said it was not clear what prompted the investigation.
