George P. Smith/For the Gazette The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School girls basketball team defeated Covenant Life decisively Saturday night to win the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference Championship game played at Thomas S. Wootton High School. The Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School girls basketball team, champions of the Potomac Valley Athletic Conference, is powered by its defense. The unit doesnt just pressure opposing ball-handlers; it smothers them, relentlessly swarming the ball until a turnover is forced or a shot is attempted. At the heart of this stingy defense is Daphne Lerner, who at 5-foot-1, is almost always the shortest player on the court. But using her quickness and speed, the sophomore comes away with steal after steal and regularly sprints her way to 20-point games. Its just crazy watching her play, because she doesnt stop, coach Rebecca Silberman said. Lerner led all PVAC scorers with 18.4 points per game and though the team doesnt track steals, Silberman guessed the sophomore averaged more than six. The pesky guard was a key component of the half-court, three-two zone press that led the Lions to a 16-1 season. Most of her points came off fast-breaks and broken plays Silberman prefers it that way. Honestly, my favorite is when we dont even run an offense, Silberman said. Silberman, a first-year coach, introduced the half-court press this season, a change of pace from last years full-court press. Though there was a learning curve, the defense improved as the season progressed and it clicked during Jewish Days season-ending 14-game win streak. At just over five feet tall, Lerner doesnt see her short stature as a disadvantage. I think that there is actually a lot of good things about it. Nobody expects you to be able to steal the ball or shoot or anything, Lerner said. I dont like to let my height bring me down.

MIFFLINBURG Inside or outside, Miltons Ethan Baker was in the zone. Left to consider his performance, a visibly ecstatic Baker simply said he had never had a game similar to the one he put together against Mifflinburg Wednesday. He is likely not alone, considering his final numbers. Baker scored 39 points to lead Milton to a 68-55 win over Mifflinburg in a late-season Heartland Division I matchup. I just shot the ball (and) it went in, Baker said. Milton entered the game one game over .500 and Baker made sure to give the Black Panthers a slight cushion in their race to reach the postseason. The potentials been there for (Baker) to (have a big game), Milton coach Gene Bruno said. He couldnt have picked a better night. Bruno described the game as close to a must-win for the Black Panthers playoff hopes and Baker delivered in the clutch. Going in there, we knew we needed more play from our guards and so Baker steps up, Bruno said. Creating for himself or working into open space without the ball, Baker put himself in position for open looks consistently, allowing his hot hand to continue throughout the game.

By Anthony Mitchell For The Daily Item MILTON — Milton clung to a small lead in the fourth quarter as Northwest worked the ball into the low post. Rotating over, Brady Chappell got a palm on the ball, pinning it to the backboard and forcing the stop for the Black Panthers. Spurred on by the change in possession, the Black Panthers won a tight battle over the Rangers, 49-40, in the second semifinal of the Milton Orange and Black Tournament. After taking the ball off of the backboard, the ball made its way to Milton’s sure-handed point guard Ethan Baker and Baker helped the Black Panthers extend their lead, keeping the ball on their side of the court. Baker helped to ensure the victory, weaving in and out of defenders as the clock went under one minute remaining, melting seconds off of the clock to prevent a comeback from the Rangers. Baker ended the night with a team-high 13 points for the Black Panthers. “Ethan Baker works very hard out there,” Milton coach Gene Bruno said. Throughout the game, the Rangers could not find a consistent answer to Travis Krall around the basket and Krall made Baker’s job easy with the guard sending the ball inside and letting the senior center jockey for position. “We made some nice baskets there at the very end,” Bruno said. “We got the ball inside. (Travis) made some big shots there at the end. That’s all good stuff.”

EAST PALESTINE – One week after a breakout performance form sophomore running back Robert Johnston, the rest of Beaver Local’s future was on display Friday against East Palestine. Sophomore quarterback Trevore McLaughin was 13-of-24 passing for 213 yards and a touchdown and sophomore running back Dustin Martsoff ran for 85 yards and a touchdown to lead the Beavers to a 24-0 win at East Palestine High School. “”I’ve never had a game like this before,” McLaughin said.
Video will begin in 5 seconds. Swans star Adam Goodes said he was ‘gutted’ by racial abuse from a 13-year-old girl in last night’s match against Collingwood, the game which opened the AFL’s indigenous round.
Tonights match was set to be a friendly affair, with the proceeds shared evenly between the two countries who are each in a conflict of their own. Palestine have been facing the Israeli occupation four decades, while Malaysia are fighting off an incursion by a group of Philippine rebels in the Bornean state of Sabah.

AFP When FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter presented the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) with FIFAs inaugural Development Award at the FIFA World Player Gala in 2009, he explained that the award was in recognition of the difficult task that it had accomplished in keeping football alive. The award recognised that, despite the obstacles to football development presented by the ongoing Middle East conflict, such as the restrictions on movement in and out of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza which require Palestinian players, coaches and officials, like other Palestinian citizens, to apply for visas to enter and leave these territories the association had been successful in growing the game, with increasing numbers of youngsters taking up football across the nations 16 districts.
