Israel invasion looms amid Gaza fighting
Israeli pressure has been mounting for an invasion of the Gaza Strip, a move that could draw global condemnation and threaten relations with Egypt. Members of the Islamic Jihad’s military wing, the al-Quds Brigades, hold a news conference, in Gaza, March 12, 2012. Three Palestinians were killed 12 March, including a teenager on his way to school, in the worst round of Gaza-Israel violence in at least seven months.

Hamas would stay out of any Israel-Iran fighting
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) Gaza’s Hamas rulers said Wednesday they would stay on the sidelines if war breaks out between Israel and Iran, easing a key Israeli concern and distancing the Islamic militants from their sponsors in Tehran. The comments by Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum coincided with speculation that Israel might strike Iran to prevent it from obtaining nuclear weapons. Such concerns were heightened by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s tough rhetoric on Iran during his high-profile visit to Washington this week.

Israel trims detention of Palestinian hunger-striker
(Reuters) – Israel Sunday reduced by a third the detention period of a Palestinian woman on hunger strike since her arrest last month, but her lawyer said it was not yet clear whether she would break her fast. Hana Shalabi, a member of the Islamic Jihad militant group, stopped taking food after Israeli troops seized her in the occupied West Bank on February 16, becoming the second Palestinian detainee in quick succession to resort to a hunger strike. An Israeli military court reduced Shalabi’s original detention of 6 months to 4 months, a spokesman said

Iran parliament vote seen bolstering Supreme Leader
TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iranians voted on Friday in a parliamentary election likely to reinforce Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s power over rival hardliners led by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Iranian leaders were looking for a high turnout to ease an acute crisis of legitimacy caused by Ahmadinejad’s re-election in 2009 when widespread accusations of fraud plunged the Islamic Republic into the worst unrest of its 33-year history. Iran also faces economic turmoil compounded by Western sanctions over a nuclear program that has prompted threats of military action by Israel, whose leader meets U.S

Obama warns against premature strike on Iran
US President Barack Obama has warned that a premature attack on Iran would allow it to play the “victim” in the nuclear crisis just days before key talks with Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu. In some of his toughest comments yet on Tehran’s nuclear drive, Obama also warned that Israel and Iran should take seriously possible US action against Iranian nuclear facilities if sanctions fail to stop the country’s atomic ambitions. “I think that the Israeli government recognizes that, as president of the United States, I don’t bluff,” Obama told the Atlantic Monthly magazine in remarks published Friday

Iran's 'A Separation:' Oscar boasting in Tehran, toasting in Israel
TEHRAN, Iran – Iran hailed the country’s first Oscar-winning film as a triumph over arch-foe Israel on Monday after an Academy Award race with its own subplots: Iranian officials giving a grudging nod to cinema and Israeli audiences flocking to see a made-in-Tehran drama. Iran’s state-spun praise for “A Separation,” which beat out an Israeli film and three others in the foreign language category, was mostly wrapped in patriotic boasting as a conquest for Iranian culture and a blow for Israel’s perceived outsized influence in America. Yet the high-profile attention by the Islamic leadership also represented a rare stamp of approval for Iran’s movie industry.
