Hands extended: Online and off, some Israelis reach out to Iranians and look to mend fences

JERUSALEM (AP) Ruthie Pliskin didn’t want Israel’s threats of a possible military strike to be the only message her country had for Iran. So the doctoral student from Tel Aviv posted a photo of herself and her cat on Facebook, with a sign in Farsi reading: “We love you, people of Iran.”She says she received enthusiastic responses from Iranians when she posted on an “Israel-Loves-Iran” Facebook page who corrected the sign’s spelling and returned warm wishes.Pliskin is among a small but growing number of Israelis trying to reach out to Iranians, even as Israeli politicians warn with growing frequency and intensity that Israel might strike to halt Tehran’s suspected nuclear weapons program.Israelis mounted an art exhibit in Tel Aviv centered on Iran, built a website in Farsi with news of Israeli daily life, and protested Saturday against plans to bomb Iranian nuclear installations

In post-Kadafi Libya, Berber minority faces identity crisis

Reporting from Zuwarah, Libya Amal Zuhair’s hijab is pushed back, revealing a strip of hair that to her traditionalist elders is a provocation, much like her fondness for rock music. She says she feels like two people: “I leave myself at home whenever I go outside. I am this other thing, this pretend person they want me to be.” Zuhair’s struggle with her identity mirrors a broader quest in Libya as the country tries to recover from the four-decade rule of Moammar Kadafi, whose Arab nationalist regime long repressed minority cultures.

Jewish community draws solace from France's response to killings

Since a gunman killed a rabbi and three children at a Jewish school in Toulouse, French Jews have been bolstered by the universal national revulsion over the attacks. Rabbi Ariel Messas was up early teaching Torah to children at a Paris synagogue Monday when his phone lit up with text messages of an attack: Four orthodox Jews murdered at a school in Toulouse that he knew. In a book-lined study room off the temple sanctuary, Rabbi Messas says he tuned his iPhone to a Paris Jewish radio station; all three sub-channels carried the news, and set the device on a heavy wooden table to listen: It was just past belief

One city, two worlds: Stories from both sides of the debate in Memphis over Muslims in America

Rashad Sharif likes to catch his fellow Memphians and Muslims off guard by repeating his favorite Southern Arabic greeting: “Assalamu alaikum, y’all.” The Arabic part means “Peace be with you,” which Sharif used to say to his fellow Christians every Sunday when he was an Episcopal altar boy. The Southern part is becoming more and more familiar to his fellow Muslims in Memphis, most of whom are immigrants from the Middle East, South Asia and Africa. The phrase usually elicits a laugh from the audience, which for Sharif is a sign that Memphis and Islam are getting better acquainted

Conservative Author David Barton Says Obama Is Most Biblically Hostile US President

March 11, 2012|11:25 am The Texas-based evangelical author and self-taught historian wrote in his latest WallBuilders post: “So perhaps the most accurate description of his (President Obama) antipathy toward Catholics, Protestants, religious Jews, and the Jewish nation would be to characterize him as anti-Biblical. And then when his hostility toward Biblical people of faith is contrasted with his preferential treatment of Muslims and Muslim nations, it further strengthens the accuracy of the anti-Biblical descriptor.” The Christian Post contacted White House officials on Friday asking for a response to Barton’s post but did not receive a statement by press time. Barton cites numerous examples of the president’s comments and actions that he says support his accusation

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Under the 'fair use' rule of copyright law, an author may make limited use of another author's work without asking permission. Fair use is based on the belief that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted materials for purposes of commentary and criticism. The fair use privilege is perhaps the most significant limitation on a copyright owner's exclusive rights.

Fair use as described at 17 U.S.C. Section 107:

"Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phono-records or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:

  • (2) the nature of the copyrighted work,
  • (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and
  • (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work."
