TEL AVIV (Reuters) – Israel may be facing a summer of power outages as the country scrambles to replace gas supplies lost because of sabotage attacks on a pipeline in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula. The pipeline that feeds gas to Israel, an easy target for anti-Israel Islamists, was one of the first victims of the revolution that erupted in Egypt in January last year

Military Keynesianism Can’t Work … Because WWII Was Different from Current Wars
World War II Was Different “Military Keynesians” – people who think that war is good for the economy – base their theory on the idea that World War 2 pulled us out of the Great Depression. I have exhaustively demonstrated that this is a myth: war is not good for the economy. But even if WWII were good for the economy, things are completely different today

Uncovering an old leaf
On a quiet street in the heart of Tel Aviv, not far from Ben-Gurion Boulevard, stands an old apartment building with a well-tended garden in front. The exterior does not reveal the exciting story that has been hidden for decades inside the building, to which the eyes of scholars and lovers of literature are now turned: Many researchers believe that in a ground-floor apartment there can be found the remnants of the estate of the great 20th-century writer Franz Kafka, whose 125th birthday was celebrated on July 3. What have documents, letters, postcards, sketches and other personal items of the famous Czech writer been doing for decades in a private apartment in Tel Aviv

Libya lawyer recalls arrest that sparked uprising
When Abdullah Senussi ordered the arrest of lawyer Fethi Tarbel on February 15 last year, Libya's then intelligence chief did not realise he was effectively signing the death warrant of Moamer Kadhafi's regime. Tarbel, a human rights activist and former political prisoner, was the coordinator of one of the few independent organisations in Libya — a group of families of victims of the Abu Salim prison massacre, where more than 1,200 political prisoners were killed by security forces in 1996. Today Tarbel, 39, is the new Libya's youth and sports minister.

Opposition mounts to Palestinian unity deal as many in Hamas loath to give up Gaza
A mounting rebellion by Hamas leaders in Gaza against a breakthrough power-sharing agreement with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas highlights a potentially fatal flaw — the deal never spelled out how the Western-backed leader can take charge again in Gaza, the territory he lost to a violent takeover by the Islamic militants. Former bitter foes Abbas and Khaled Mashaal, Hamas' top leader in exile, signed the Qatar-brokered deal in Doha last week, saying they are committed to a true partnership. As part of the agreement, Abbas is to head an interim unity government that replaces rival administrations in the West Bank and Gaza and leads the Palestinians to general elections
