Israel congratulates Egypt on inauguration of parliament
Jerusalem (dpa) – Israel Thursday congratulated Egypt over the inaugration of its new parliament – and urged its southern neighbour to uphold the peace treaty it signed with the Jewish state in 1979. Israel “extends its congratulations to the people of Egypt for its efforts to achieve freedom, democracy and economic development,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yigal Palmor said in a statement. “We send the new parliament our wishes of constructive and fruitful work,” he said, adding “We trust Egypt will continue to uphold the importance of peace and stability in our region.” Egypt‘s newly-elected parliament, in which Islamists hold two-third of the 508 seats, held its first inaugural session on Monday, two days before the first anniversary of the January 25 revolution that ousted president Hosny Mubarak.
