Byzant Scriptorium – The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn is the best known and most influential modern magical order, and though it lasted less than a dozen years, its legacy has played a major role in the magical revival of the twentieth century. The Order was founded in 1888 by Dr. William Wynn Westcott, a London coroner, and Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers. It survived in its original form until 1903. Both Westcott and Mathers had a background in secret and magical orders, being Freemasons and members of the Rosicrucian order Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (SRIA), among others.

The story goes that Westcott was sent parts of a strange, encrypted document by a Reverend Woodford, a Mason and Hermeticist, who claimed to have found it in a London bookstall. Once Westcott had deciphered the manuscript, it turned out to be an outline for the rituals and teachings of a magical order, with instructions to contact Sapiens Dominabitur Astris, in care of Anna Sprengel in Hanover. Westcott did this and was told that he could found “an elementary branch of the Rosicrucian Order in England.” Mathers helped to craft workable rituals from outlines in the document, and the Golden Dawn was born.

On 1st March, 1888, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was established with the opening of the Isis-Urania Temple at 17 Fitzroy Street, London. Its three chiefs were Westcott, Mathers and Dr. William Robert Woodman, the Supreme Magus of the SRIA. Over the next eight years over 300 initiates joined the Order.

The program of lodge work and individual magical training created for the Golden Dawn made the important step forward of linking the secret, group work of the Order to the ritual work performed by initiates as part of their own training and practice. The teachings of the Golden Dawn were diverse, and included Ceremonial Magic, Kabbalah, inner alchemy, Tarot, Enochian Magic, astrology, divination and Egyptian Magic – all with the aim of performing the Great Work of self-realization. The Order was arranged in a hierarchy of eleven degrees through which initiates could progress: the neophyte degree followed by ten further degrees corresponding to the sefirot on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life.

Prominent members of the Golden Dawn included Dr. Arthur Edward Waite, Aleister Crowley and the poet William Butler Yeats. The clash of egos inherent in this talented potpourri pulled the Golden Dawn apart from the inside. Mathers wanted to be the sole chief of the Order, and claimed that he was in contact with Secret Chiefs who had proclaimed him the “Visible Head of the Order.” In 1891 he set up his own lodge in Paris, and when Woodman died this same year, his position in the Order was not reallocated. The Woodford document and subsequent letters from Anna Sprengel, used by Westcott to give the Golden Dawn some legitimizing lineage, were almost certainly forgeries, and accusations along these lines saw Westcott resign in 1897. In his resignation letter, Westcott cited the stigma still attached to the magical arts: “having received an intimation that it had somehow become known to state officers that I was a prominent official of a society in which I was foolishly posturing as one possessed of magical powers and that if this became more public it would not do for a Coroner of the Crown to be made shame of in such a mad way.” Florence Farr took his place, but the demise of the Order was accelerated with the initiation of Aleister Crowley in 1898. After his expulsion in 1900, Crowley published some of the Order’s secret documents in his magazine, The Equinox.

The disintegration of the Golden Dawn now began in earnest, resulting in a raft of new magical orders as former members founded orders of their own to bolster their egos or keep the tradition alive. By 1903, the year that Waite formed his own mystically-inclined version of the Order, the original Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn is considered to have faded away. New orders that grew, directly or indirectly, from the extinguishing of the Golden Dawn include:

Dion Fortune joined the Stella Matutina in 1919, and Israel Regardie joined in 1934. Regardie became disillusioned with the pettiness and incompetence of the surviving “adepts” and decided to publish his collection of secret papers and rituals in the hope of allowing the knowledge to survive. The Golden Dawn was published in four volumes between 1937 and 1940, and this was eventually the catalyst for the flowering of new orders and solitary magicians working within and expanding upon the rich Golden Dawn tradition.

Small Golden Dawn Water Cup – The Golden Dawn Shop

These are smaller than our regular Water Cup. Made of wood, 4.75 high by 2.5 wide. No leather petals are appliedjust paint.

There are four basic magical Elements: Fire, Water, Air, and Earth They are the basic modes of existence and action the building blocks of everything in the universe. (These Elements are not to be confused with the scientists table of elements, which are only the most materialized expressions of the Elements in the physical plane.)

Qualities of Water: passive, feminine, receptive, sustaining, subconscious, creative, fluidic, and generative. In an esoteric sense, the concept of water implies all liquid materials. Furthermore, the primeval waters, the image of all primal matter, contains all solid bodies before they obtain rigidity and form. The so-called fluid body of man is translated by modern psychology as a symbol of the unconscious or the archetypal feminine side of the personality. Water is seen as a symbol of the Maternal, the Great Mother, as well as the great unfathomable and mysterious well of Wisdom contained within the subconscious mind. In short, water symbolizes the infinite realm of possibilities, which precede all form and all creation. It is limitless and immortal the Waters of Creation. Submersion in water alludes to a return to the pre-formed state. Like the Element of Fire, Water also symbolizes the ideas of transfiguration and regeneration. The direction or cardinal point assigned to Water is West. Excerpts from the book Self-Initiation into the Golden Dawn Tradition

The Golden Dawn Water Cup is used by the Zelator Adeptus Minor in all magical workings pertaining to the nature of elemental Water, and under the presidency of the Hebrew letter Heh and the Cup of the Tarot. The Cup is based in part on Egyptian Lotus designs. The Cup has eight lotus petals painted blue ornamented with orange.

Golden Dawn Girls Director Hvard Bustnes: The Far Right …

AMSTERDAM Test screenings are a tricky business at the best of times, but when the subjects of Hvard Bustness documentary sat down to watch their big-screen debut last week, its fair to say the exit scores were always going to be in the low numbers. Filmed over four years, the film would, theyd thought, show them as normal people with families, but instead it paints a disturbing view of modern-day neo-Nazism, lifting the lid on the controversial Greek nationalist party through the lives of three women whose menfolk make up its central core.

Bustnes soon received word that they were not happy, and security was duly increased for last nights premiere, which took place at a very fractious point in modern European history, following a large right-wing rally in Poland last week and smaller incidents in Holland recently. With the spectre of Charlottesville still also very much in the news indeed, a Vice documentary on the subject saw a white supremacist citing Golden Dawn as an inspiration festival figures were on the alert. Happily, the screening passed without incident, but the very real fear of retribution of any kind made it clear that Bustnes had touched a raw nerve. Variety sat down with him at IDFA to discuss the film.

What gave you the idea for this film?

Hvard Bustnes: Everything started in 2013 when a colleague of mine, Christian Falch, who is also the producer of my film, made a documentary called Blackhearts. Its a music documentary about black metal. He included in this film a band called Naer Mataron, who are a black metal band from Greece, and it turned out that their bassist is a member of parliament for Golden Dawn. When Christian told me this, and that Golden Dawn was the fifth biggest party there, I was shocked, because Greece was my paradise as a kid. Id been going there for holidays lots of times and everyone was always so friendly. Then suddenly they had this huge far-right party they have, like, 400,000 people voting for them. I was really curious to find out more about it. So I decided to use the access that Christian had [acquired] through this black metal music film to make a bigger film about this political situation andthe humanbeings in this party.

Where did you start?

When we arrived in Greece in 2013 almost all the parliament members were in custody, in detention, accused of leading a criminal organization. So it was Jenny, the wife of the black metal bassist who met us, and she introduced us to the rest of the women. First we met Dafni, the mother of one of the parliament members, and then Ourania, who is the daughter of the big boss [Nikolaos Michaloliakos]. We wanted to get as close as possible to the leadership of the organization, so Ourania was really important for us. She was a psychology student, but suddenly she became more or less the leader of Golden Dawn. And I thought she was a really interesting character.

Did you always intend to focus on the women?

Well, the men were in prison! [Laughs] But I think that the women are more interesting. I was really curious about them I wanted hear how they talk about the men. The interesting part for me is how they always find a reason why the men are violent or whatever. Its always somebody elses fault they always blame somebody else. So Im curious about how they make up their worldview. To them, these men are the best people in the world. To me, they look like violent people who beat immigrants. So I wondered if they really believed this, or if it was just something they said. But I think they actually believe it.

They didnt seem at all curious about you motives. Why did they agree?

I always wondered why. It may be because we are from Norwayandblack metal music was born in Norway. I dont know! They never asked me about my own views. After a while, though, I had to confront them, and I think they understood then that we had different political views.

Was it difficult?

Oh yes, it was so difficult. Many times I was thinking about stopping it. When you make a film, sometimes you have moments where you believe you will lose your access. Because you push things, and the subject maybe doesnt like your questions. So there were a lot of times when we thought, Maybe this is the last time well see them. But luckily we were able to get more footage.

Did you realize that this would become such a big subject in the world?

I noticed as we went on that it was getting more and more timely, which is good for the distribution on the film, but I would prefer that it hadnt happened. Its really sad and scary. Ive always been curious: How is possible to have these kinds of ideas in modern times, knowing everything we know about the past?

Should we be worried?

Yes. Ive always been interested in history, but this is modern history you can see it happening right in front of you. I also think its really important to understand what you want to fight against. And we need to show it, because it wont disappear by itself the far right movement, they are marching again. We have too many greedy people, too many rich people, and too many poor people, and when the difference between them becomes too big, we have these kinds of movements. So the only way to stop it is to make a more fair society.

Turning Attention Towards Golden Dawn Minerals Inc (GDMRF)’s Technicals – Trion Journal

Golden Dawn Minerals Inc (GDMRF)s Aroon Up level has reached above the key level of 70, indicating a strong upward trend for the security.

The Aroon indicator was developed by Tushar Chande in 1995. Aroon is used to measure the presence and strength of trends. Aroon can be drawn either as two lines, the Aroon Up and Aroon Down. The Aroon Up and Aroon Down lines oscillate between 0 and 100.

Aroon Up for a given time period is calculated by determining how much time (on a percentage basis) elapsed between the start of the time period and the point at which the highest closing price during that time period occurred. Aroon Up will be 100 when the instrument is setting new highs for the period. Conversely, Aroon Up will be 0 if the instrument has continually dropped throughout the period. Aroon Down is calculated in a similar manner, expect looking for lows as opposed to highs.

Turning to some additional technical indicators, at the time of writing, the 14-day ADX for Golden Dawn Minerals Inc (GDMRF) is standing at 22.43. Many chart analysts believe that an ADX reading over 25 would suggest a strong trend. A reading under 20 would suggest no trend, and a reading from 20-25 would suggest that there is no clear trend signal.

What Is ADX?

The Average Directional Index or ADX. The ADX was created by J. Welles Wilder to help determine how strong a trend is. In general, a rising ADX line means that an existing trend is gaining strength. The opposite would be the case for a falling ADX line.

Looking further at additional technical indicators we can see that the 14-day Commodity Channel Index (CCI) for Golden Dawn Minerals Inc (GDMRF) is sitting at -79.17. CCI is an indicator used in technical analysis that was designed by Donald Lambert. Although it was originally intended for commodity traders to help identify the start and finish of market trends, it is frequently used to analyze stocks as well. A CCI reading closer to +100 may indicate more buying (possibly overbought) and a reading closer to -100 may indicate more selling (possibly oversold).

Moving averages can help spot trends and price reversals. They may also be used to help find support or resistance levels. Moving averages are considered to be lagging indicators meaning that they confirm trends. A certain stock may be considered to be on an uptrend if trading above a moving average and the average is sloping upward. On the other side, a stock may be considered to be in a downtrend if trading below the moving average and sloping downward. Shares of Golden Dawn Minerals Inc (GDMRF) have a 7-day moving average of 0.22. Taking a glance at the relative strength indictor, we note that the 14-day RSI is currently at 42.86, the 7-day stands at 39.51, and the 3-day is sitting at 28.59.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator that measures the speed and change of stock price movements. The RSI was developed by J. Welles Wilder, and it oscillates between 0 and 100. Generally, the RSI is considered to be oversold when it falls below 30 and overbought when it heads above 70. RSI can be used to detect general trends as well as finding divergences and failure swings.

Who are you calling Mycenaean? – London Review of Books (subscription) (blog)

The photograph on the front page of the neo-fascist Golden Dawns website last week was a collage by the photographer Nellys, produced as propaganda for the Metaxas regime and displayed in the Greek Pavilion at the 1939 New York Worlds Fair. Theres a ruined temple in the background, and in the foreground the ancient bronze statue known as the Artemision Zeus or Poseidon, next to an elderly modern Greek shepherd who looks remarkably like the classical god. The message of racial continuity between ancient and modern Greeks that the regime was keen to project, alongside its tourism campaign, could not have been more obvious.

The Golden Dawn headline above the picture claims that the 4000-year racial continuity of the Greeks has been proved. The article is based on a study published in Nature, Genetic origins of Minoans and Mycenaeans, by Iosif Laziridis et al. It was reported in the international as well as the Greek press, and the emphasis in most headlines was on the genetic continuity between people in the Bronze Age Aegean and contemporary Greeks: Minos, our grandfather, for example.

The scientific paper takes Minoans and Mycenaeans as truthful ethnic categories, representing coherent groups of people who identified themselves as such, but they are in fact archeological constructs originating in the late 19th and early 20th century, coined by the likes of Heinrich Schliemann, Arthur Evans and their predecessors. This is the pots equal people approach which most archeologists have left behind, aware of the complexities and intricacies of social and cultural identity. (Theres also old-fashioned talk of the rise of civilisation.)

The researchers say they generated genome-wide data from 19 ancient individuals, classed as Minoan or Mycenaean depending on their dates and whether they came from Crete or mainland Greece. (Why 19? They dont say. No statistical methods were used to predetermine sample size.) Other data were used for the purposes of analysis, including DNA from 30 Modern Greek individuals, from mainland Greece, Cyprus and Crete.

One of the questions the researchers set out to answer was: Do the labels Minoan and Mycenaean correspond to genetically coherent populations or do they obscure a more complex structure of the peoples who inhabited Crete and mainland Greece at this time? But theyd already answered it in the affirmative by their choice of categories, by the labels they attached to the sampled skeletons.

Modern Greeks resemble the Mycenaeans, they conclude, but with some additional dilution of the Early Neolithic ancestry. The results of the study support the idea of continuity but not isolation in the history of populations of the Aegean, before and after the time of its earliest civilisations. But its hardly surprising that a few modern individuals living in the Eastern Mediterranean should share genetic material with a few individuals who lived in the same region in the Bronze Age; its a big jump from there to the neo-Nazi fantasy of 4000 years of racial continuity.

In a press interview following the publication of the study, one of the main authors claimed that there is no doubt that our findings reflect historical events in the Greek lands: the picture of historical continuity is crystal clear, as is very clear the fact that through the centuries Greeks evolved receiving genetic influences from other populations. The category of Greekness here appears more or less given and stable, despite the influences, from the Early Bronze Age to the present. It sounds like a version of the 19th-century national narrative of the power of eternal Hellenism to absorb external influences.

The researchers stray beyond genetics for some shaky supportive evidence. The article mentions the distribution of shared toponyms in Crete, mainland Greece and Anatolia, supported by a single bibliographic reference dating to 1896. The appearance of the Bronze Age people of the Aegean has been preserved in colourful frescos and pottery, the researchers say, depicting people with mostly dark hair and eyes. They infer that the appearance of our ancient samples matched the visual representations suggesting that art of this period reproduced phenotypes naturalistically. But there were well-known non-naturalistic artistic conventions in the Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean, such as the depiction of men and women with red and white skin respectively.

The idea that facial features denote ethnic types takes us back to the interwar years, and even to the late 19th century. The choice of photograph on the Golden Dawn website may not have been so inappropriate after all. Whatever its authors intentions, this single study, with its small sample, out-dated rationale and circular logic, is being consumed as a rehearsal of 19th and early 20th-century racial discourse, updated with a modern and seemingly authoritative toolkit.

By Trion Contributor

(Theres also old-fashioned talk of the rise of civilisation.) The researchers say they generated genome-wide data from 19 ancient individuals, classed as Minoan or Mycenaean depending on their dates and whether they came from Crete or mainland Greece.
